TOPSHAM — George C. Wilson, 91, of Topsham, died May 1 at the Mid Coast Senior Health Center in Brunswick.

He was born Aug. 3, 1921, in Opelousas, La., the son of George and Lily Andrus Wilson.

Wilson attended Southwestern Louisiana College, and enlisted in the U.S. Navy following his graduation in 1942. He served in the south Pacific during World War II, and began his enlisted career as an anti-submarine warfare specialist aboard aircraft carriers and other ships. He also served with a command ship during the Cuban missile crisis.

Wilson rose to the rank of lieutenant commander while serving his country for 30 years. He retired in 1972, and then began serving as a eucharistic minister in the chapel of the Brunswick Naval Air Station. He also served as president of the Fleet Reserve Association in Brunswick, the American Legion Post 202 in Topsham, and the Maine chapter of Disabled American Veterans. He was loved and respected by many in the Mid-Coast area for his generosity and willingness to help others.

He was predeceased by his wife, Dorothy Wilson.

Wilson is survived by his five children, Barbara Wilson, of Wiscasset, Bonnie Carr, of Augusta, Duane Wilson, of Southampton, Pa., Diane Miller, of Taberg, N.Y., and Larry Wilson, of Lisbon Falls; 16 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.

A Mass of Christian burial was held Tuesday at St. Charles Borromeo Church-All Saints Parish in Brunswick. Committal prayers with full military honors followed at Riverside Cemetery in Brunswick, as well as a a reception at the Captain Daniel Stone Inn in Brunswick.
