NEW BRITAIN, Conn. – Even though the sun was peeking through the clouds, the Portland Sea Dogs’ game against the New Britain Rock Cats was postponed shortly before 4 p.m. Thursday.

There was heavy rain in the area for most of the afternoon and the reason for the postponement was announced as wet grounds. But about 15 minutes after the decision, the rain stopped completely and the sun was shining brightly.

“It’s determined by the field conditions,” Portland Manager Kevin Boles said. “(The Rock Cats) said it was unplayable. That’s what we have to go with. There’s been a lot of rain here.”

The postponement will be made up in July when Portland returns. The teams already have a doubleheader at 4:35 p.m. Friday because of an earlier postponement.

Boles said the Sea Dogs’ pitching plans for Friday are uncertain. Knuckleballer Charlie Haeger (1-0, 1.80) was set to face Trevor May (1-1, 3.90) of New Britain on Thursday.

In his last start, Haeger allowed one hit over five innings but didn’t get a decision in a walk-off win Saturday against the Rock Cats at Hadlock Field.

According to the probables, Brandon Workman (4-0, 2.80) will face Alex Meyer (2-1, 3.31) in the opener of the doubleheader with Keith Couch (1-0, 3.70) against Cole DeVries in the second game. DeVries will make a major league rehab start for the Rock Cats.

Portland has played 10 games against New Britain this season, winning seven, although the Rock Cats (18-15) are on a four-game winning streak that has pulled them within three games of the first-place Sea Dogs (20-11) in the Eastern Division.

The teams will play single games at 6:35 p.m. Saturday and 1:35 p.m. Sunday.

Portland is 4-0-1 in its last five series in New Britain, taking 2 of 3 in an April visit.

The Sea Dogs, who boast the league’s best record, won for the 20th time this season with a 10-4 victory over Reading at Hadlock Field on Wednesday night.

Tony Thomas went 4 for 4 with three RBI, finishing a home run shy of the cycle. Xander Bogaerts drove in three runs and Peter Hissey went 3 for 5.

New Britain completed a three-game sweep of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats.
