SOUTH HARPSWELL — Gary J. Beattie, 74, of South Harpswell passed away suddenly on May 16, 2013, at Maine Medical Center in Portland. He was born July 26, 1937 in Northfield, Vermont to the late James and Amy Beattie.

Gary served in the Army, earning several rifle marksmanship awards. For many years, he workedforSGPhilipstraveling and building all over the country. He worked his entire life as a carpenter and mason.

Gary was a loving man with a big heart, always willing to help anyone. A highly skilled craftsman, he enjoyed building, gardening, fishing, dancing and most recently, bee keeping.

A member of the Elks for many years, he is loved and will be missed deeply by his soul mate of 33 years Gertrude Heath of South Harpswell, sister Georgia Maschmeier of Alabama, his son Eric Beattie and daughters Ann Beattie and Amy Long of Vermont, as well as his extended family Sandi LeMaster, James Heath, MaryAnn Heath, Melinda Pasupulati, Roxanne Moody, Michael Heath, Timothy Heath and Mathew Heath, as well as their significant others and 17 grandchildren and 22 great grandchildren. He was predeceased by his brother Jim, and his daughter-in-law Tessa Heath.

There will be a private Celebration of his Life with his family.
