BRUNSWICK — A Connecticut man who police say is responsible for trafficking large amounts of heroin into the Brunswick area was arrested Monday at a local motel.

Angel Quinones, 20, of the greater Hartford, Conn., area (exact address unknown), was arrested at the Knight’s Inn motel on Pleasant Street about 5 p.m. Monday, according to Police Department Detective Rich Cutliffe.

Also arrested was 23-year-old Jason LaChance of Brunswick. The two men were charged with unlawful trafficking in drugs.

Quinones is “a substantial dealer in the area,” Detective Sgt. Marty Rinaldi said Tuesday.

Agents conducted a sting in a motel room, seizing approximately 5 grams of heroin, packaged for sale, Cutliffe said. Heroin is packaged in bags or “folds” of 0.05 to 0.1 grams and sold for $20 to $30, Rinaldi said.

Heroin is on the rise in Cumberland County this spring. It’s now the most prevalent substance the Maine Drug Enforcement Agency sees on the street, more accessible and cheaper than OxyContin, Cutliffe said in April.

The drug “has become easier to get, and it all seems to be coming from out of state,” Cutliffe said.

The Brunswick Police Department, MDEA and Sagadahoc County Sheriff’s Office have been investigating Quinones since January, according to Cutliffe.

“We believe he’s been coming up on a regular basis since the beginning of the year, staying for a week at a time and selling heroin,” he said. “He’s come up at least five times that we’re aware of, stayed approximately a week, and each time he brings 15 to 20 grams of heroin.”

Quinones was held at Cumberland County Jail on $10,000 cash bail or $50,000 surety. He was scheduled to appear in Superior Court on Wednesday.
