LEWISTON – Bates College held its annual commencement ceremonies Sunday, awarding bachelor’s degrees to 436 students in Merrill Gymnasium.
Gary Hirshberg, co-founder and chairman of the organic yogurt producer Stonyfield Farm, delivered the commencement address and received an honorary degree.
Honorary degrees were also given to environmental historian William Cronon, former Bates President Elaine Tuttle Hansen, and Dr. Vivian W. Pinn, inaugural director of the Office of Research on Women’s Health at the National Institutes of Health. Bates President Clayton Spencer conferred the honorary degrees.
