CHARLOTTE — Authorities in Maine say a 5-year-old boy was killed after he was hit by a vehicle in Charlotte that was driven by his father who was backing up in their yard.

The Washington County Sheriff’s Department says that Trent James was unresponsive when his father Calvin James took him to the Calais Regional Hospital on Sunday.

The boy was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The investigation determined that Calvin James was working in his yard and was backing up a vehicle when Trent was struck.

Calvin James took his son to the hospital.

Detectives say the death appears to be an accident, but the investigation is continuing and is expected to take some time.
