AUBURN — Democratic gubernatorial candidate Steve Woods is challenging Rep. Mike Michaud to decide by June 10 whether he’s entering the race for governor.
Woods, a businessman and Town Council chairman in Yarmouth, was the first declared candidate for the governor’s race in 2014, making his announcement in November. But he said the Democratic Party is awaiting word from Michaud after Rep. Chellie Pingree announced that she intends to stay put in Congress.
Woods planned to formally announce his challenge Tuesday evening during a meeting of the Auburn Democratic Committee.
He said it’s time for Democrats to make some decisions and that the party is better off with candidates who are enthusiastic about running. Independent Eliot Cutler also has said he’s running. Republican Gov. Paul LePage has set up a re-election committee.
