KENNEBUNK — A 27-year-old Sanford woman and her boyfriend have been charged in connection with the theft last month of a 4-month-old puppy named Walton from the Animal Welfare Society.

Steve Jacobsen, the Welfare Society’s Executive Director, commended Sanford’s Animal Control Officer, Lauren Masellas, for doing “good police work” in locating the mixed breed dog, which was stolen April 23, and for returning the puppy to the shelter.

Jacobsen said Walton “was very thin” when it was returned to the shelter.

The dog has since been adopted by a family that had visited the shelter the day before Walton was stolen. That family had said they wanted to take another night to consider whether they should adopt the puppy.

Masellas could not be reached Tuesday, but Seacoastonline.com reported that Masellas charged Jade Hussey of Sanford with felony theft.

Hussey’s boyfriend, Keith Anderson, was charged with possession of stolen property.
