Greely High School announces top 10 seniors

Mollie Braley, daughter of Randy Braley and Laurie Logan, was a member of jazz band, concert band, all-state honors jazz band, the National Honor Society, the Spanish Honor Society, Spanish Club, the Honduras Mission Team and Justice and Outreach Ministry. She was secretary of the National Honor Society chapter, volunteered at Maine Medical Center and worked as a Sunday school teacher. She was awarded the Phi Beta Kappa Award, the silver and bronze awards in the National Spanish Exam, and is a National Merit commended scholar. She will be attending the University of Chicago in the fall, and plans to study economics, psychology or neuroscience.

Megan Finlay, daughter of Polly and Brad Finlay, participated in the National Honor Society, and Spanish Club, as well as volunteering with Sail Maine, youth lacrosse, Habitat for Humanity, youth hockey, and the Community Food Pantry Service. She played varsity ice hockey and varsity lacrosse and was awarded Eastern Maine Class A – All Star Team 2013, Eastern Maine Class A – All Academic Team 2013, Greely Hockey’s Most Valuable Player 2013, Maine State Champion 2012 and 2013, Portland Press Herald All State Team 2012, U-19 Maine State Champion 2012, U-19 New England Regional Champion 2012, All East Ice Hockey 2nd Team 2012, and Eastern Maine Honorable Mention 2011. She plans to attend Sacred Heart University in Fairfield Conn., where she will study sports medicine and hopes to join the Sacred Heart Pioneers women’s ice hockey team.

Sarah Fitch, daughter of Peter and Maura Fitch, participated in varsity outdoor and indoor track, Natural Helpers and Fusion Youth Group. She was a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Latin Honor Society and Girl Talk. Her leadership positions included captain of varsity indoor track, senior leader in Fusion Youth Group at East Point Christian Church, Girl Talk leader and middle school track coach. Her awards include National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Latin Honor Society, Western Maine Conference All-Academic Team Indoor Track 2013, three-time member of state champion 4×800 relay team. She plans to attend Taylor University in the fall, studying exercise science.

Sarah Holmes, daughter of Lori and Mark Holmes, participated in concert band, math team, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society, and was a creator of Craft Camp for girls, ages 4-10, and a junior coach for North Atlantic Figure Skating Club. She played on the field hockey and lacrosse teams, as well as the Nor’Easters Synchronized Skating Team and the Triton Swim Team. She was the class salutatorian and her awards included Harvard Book Award, AP Scholar, Greely honor roll, Burr and Burton Academy Headmaster’s List, outstanding achievement in math grade 9, Maine Field Hockey Association Academic All-State Team, Western Maine All-Academic Team (field hockey) and U.S. Figure Skating Bronze Level Achievement Award. She will attend Bates College in the fall, studying pre-med and math.

Monica Lynn Howland, daughter of Jerry and Denise Howland, participated in National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society, Bigs & Littles, Community Service Club, and Natural Helpers. She ran cross country and played hockey and ultimate frisbee. Her awards included Society of Women Engineers, Hobey Baker Award, 2013 All-Academic Hockey Team, 2013 Maine Interscholastic Athletic Award. She will attend College of the Holy Cross, in Worcester, Mass.

Jacob Isaacson, son of John and Linda Isaacson, participated in National Honor Society, French Honor Society, Portland Youth Wind Ensemble, jazz band, math team and chemistry club. His awards include a National Merit Letter of Commendation, and being named a Rensselaer Medal recipient and an AP scholar. His sports activities included varsity soccer, varsity indoor track captain, varsity outdoor track captain, Western Maine All-Academic Teams in soccer and track. He also volunteered with the Maine Lakes Environmental Association, and with Camp Sunshine for six years. He will study chemical engineering in the fall at Tufts University.

Hannah Anecia Novak,daughter of Dan and Susan Novak, was a Girl Talk mentor, worked on the 2012 year book and helped organize Spirit Week. She played lacrosse, was a member of Bigs & Littles and the Spanish Club, and received awards from the Spanish Club Honor Society and the National Honor Society. In July she will go on the trip to Guatemala with Partners in Development to help with the building of homes in the village of Concepción. She will attend Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva, N.Y.

Nina K. Oberg, daughter of Kerry and Gwenne Oberg, participated in drama blub, band, National Honor Society and Spanish Honor Society. She was the founder and leader of the first Maine chapter of Girl Talk, a peer-to-peer mentoring program between high school girls and middle school girls. She was captain of the indoor and outdoor varsity track team and was a pole vault state qualifier and placed at the 2013 Indoor State Track Meet. She was awarded the Colby Book Award in 2012 and the Maine Principals’ Association Award in 2013. She will attend Boston College in the fall.

Katherine Ventre, daughter of Pete and Liz Ventre, participated in math team, jazz band, volleyball, student government, National Honor Society, Maine Youth Leadership and was president of the Spanish National Honor Society, a counselor at Maine Youth Leadership, and YMCA Camp Huckins, a math team senior captain, and Maine juniors volleyball co-captain. She played varsity volleyball and Maine juniors volleyball. Her awards include the 2012 Yale Book Award, Maine Volleyball Senior All-Academic Team and she was a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, she was an international baccalaureate diploma candidate, and a math and chemistry tutor. She will attend Amherst College and plans to study biochemistry and Spanish.

Brian Wright, son of Andy and Mary Wright, Model United Nations, and math team. He volunteered at Camp Sunshine, youth soccer clinic and at the Blackfeet Reservation in Montana. He was a Dirigo Boys State representative, a class representative on the Parent/Student/Teacher Advisory Counsel, and a senior advisor for incoming freshmen. He was the alpine ski team captain and played soccer and ultimate frisbee. He was a member of the National honor Society and received the Williams College Book Award, Alpine Ski Team Coach’s Award, Alpine Ski Team Most Improved Player Award and was an international baccalaureate degree candidate, math tutor, and soccer referee. He will attend the University of Pennsylvania in the fall, majoring in either economics or international relations.
