The University of Maine announced Wednesday that former Black Bears head football coach Tom Lichtenberg passed away Sunday following a long illness. He was 72.
Lichtenberg coached Maine for just one season, 1989, leading the Black Bears to a 9-3 record and the Yankee Conference championship.
“The thoughts and prayers of Black Bear Nation are with the family and friends of Coach Lichtenberg,” said Jack Cosgrove, Maine’s head football coach, in a statement.
“Coach Lichtenberg had a tremendous impact both on and off the field during his time at Maine.”
The funeral service will be held June 8 in Sylvania, Ohio. In lieu of flowers, the Lichtenberg family has requested that donations be made to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. To donate, visit FCA.org.
Lichtenberg, 72, was born on July 13, 1940 in Mason, Ohio. He graduated from the University of Louisville in 1962, according to The Columbus Distpatch.
He left UMaine to coach Ohio University’s football team from 1990-94. He had less success in his home state, finishing with a 25-59-3 record at OU.
Lichtneberg also served as an offensive assistant at big-time programs like Notre Dame and Ohio State, and coached at Drake as recently as 2009.
