The Western Maine Conference outdoor track and field championship meet was postponed two days by bad weather, but it was worth the wait when it finally contested Monday at Lake Region High School in Naples.

Falmouth’s boys edged Greely (140-133) for the top spot in Division I (larger schools).

The Yachtsmen got wins from Jacob Buhelt in the 100 (11.22 seconds) and 200 (23.0), Bryce Murdick in the two-mile (10 minutes, 30.56 seconds), Tony St. Angelo in the high jump (6 feet, 2 inches), Alex Gowen in the pole vault (12-6), Shreyas Joshi in the discus (128-3) and their 400 (45.14) relay team. Andy Clement was runner-up in the 300 hurdles (43.55). Andrew Thornton came in second in the pole vault (12-0).

“The boys had an all-around strong day,” said Falmouth coach Danny Paul. “We covered all areas well. Our relays ran well too.”

Greely winners included Nick Maynard in the triple jump (41-8.5), James Ferrar in the shot put (45-5.5) and its 1,600 (3:45.84) and 3,200 (8:32.41) relays. Runners-up included Jacob Isaacson in the 100 (11.44), Liam Campbell in the 800 (2:08.69) and the mile (4:46.0), Nathan Madeira in the two-mile (10:37.74), Ben Giffard in the 110 hurdles (16.43) and Nick Sprague in the javelin (142-3).

“The’ boys competition was a war between York, Falmouth, and Greely,” said Rangers coach John Folan. “Only Falmouth’s 1-3-4 finish in the 3,200 finally sealed the deal.  It was a great meet and a lot of fun to be part of.”

In Division I girls’ action, Greely took top honors with 151 points, 20 better than York. Falmouth (109) came in fourth.

The Rangers were led by winners Kirstin Sandreuter in the mile (5:25.39) and two-mile (11:30.22), Hannah Keisman in the 300 hurdles (52.11), Gwen Sawyer in the shot put (40-7) and discus (101-3) and their 3,200 relay team (10:12.63). Keisman also came in second in the triple jump (32-8). Jess Wilson was second in the 800 (2:29.08) and runner-up in the mile (5:37.97). Sophia McMonagle placed second in the pole vault (8-0). Alyssa Casarez was runner-up in the shot put (31-9.75) and the discus (98-0).

“The girls’ meet really came down to a 2-3-4-6 finish in the pole vault by Greely athletesSophia McMonagle, Nina Oberg, Lucy Wetzel, and Kayla Barry,” said Folan. “Also keys for us were the 1-2 finishes in three events, the mile with Kirstin Sandreuter and Jess Wilson and the discus and shot put with Gwen Sawyer and Alyssa Casarez.  Good depth points throughout kept us on top, in particular in the triple jump, 2-3-4 with Hannah Keisman, Sarah Ingraham, and Kaley Sawyer performing the feat. 

The Yachtsmen got a win from Sarah Sparks in the 400 (1:05.02). Runners-up included Charlotte Cutshall in the 100 (13.16), Emma Van Wickler in the 200 (28.39), Madeline Roberts in the two-mile (12:03.11), Kaileigh Wimert in the racewalk (8:35.26) and their 400 (52.59), 1,600 (4:28.97) and 3,200 (10:27.11) relays.

“We competed and have a good group moving on Saturday,” Paul said. “Our relays and throwers made strong contributions.”

In Division II (smaller schools) girls, Freeport (111 points) was second to Traip (156), while Yarmouth (76) tied Sacopee Valley for third and North Yarmouth Academy (60) came in fifth.

The Falcons got victories from Lexi Dietrich in the 200 (27.81), Kelsey Grant in the 100 hurdles (17.28) and the javelin (101-1), Lucy Zachau in the racewalk (9:29.32) and their 3,200 relay (10:41.8). Grant was also runner-up in the 100 (13.6). Elly Bengtsson finished second in the mile (5:59.96). Freeport was also second in the 400 (54.41) and 1,600 (4:34.82) relays.

The Clippers were paced by Emma Egan, who won the high jump (4-8), and Abby Vogel, first in the shot put (34-3). Emma Pidden was second in the 300 hurdles (53.9). Megan Smith was runner-up in the pole vault (8-6). Gina Robertson finished second in the javelin (85-2).

Panthers winners included Hannah Austin in the mile (5:43.79) and two-mile (12:14.94) and Kayla Rose in the discus (99-7). Muriel Adams was runner-up in the discus (97-9).

On the boys’ side, NYA (91 points) was third behind Wells (174) and Sacopee (143). Yarmouth (54) placed fourth and Freeport (49) was sixth.

The Panthers got wins from Jake Burns in the 300 hurdles (41.01) and the 1,600 relay team (3:41.98). Runners-up included Burns in the 110 hurdles (16.15), Michael McIntosh in the 100 (11.3) and 200 (23.48), El Tayeb Dahia in the 400 (54.49), Matt Malcom in the mile (4:56.89) and the 400 (46.01) and 3,200 (9:19.85) relays.

Clippers winners included Ben Decker in the mile (4:40.69) and Darren Shi in the shot put (44-10.75). Wes Crawford was runner-up in the 800 (2:07.14).

The Falcons got first-place finishes from Harrison Stivers in the 800 (2:04.47), Victor Skorapa in the two-mile (11:32.3) and Luke Spaulding in the racewalk (8:44.54).

States

The state championship meets are Saturday. Falmouth, Greely and Yarmouth vie for Class B honors in Bath. Freeport and NYA compete for the Class C crown in Dover-Foxcroft.

“Saturday will be a challenge, as we should do well with our depth, but it will tough,” Paul said. “No team on the boys’ side looks dominant. The girls’ meet is Waterville’s to lose.”

The New England championship meet is Saturday, June 8, in New Britain, Conn.
