PORTLAND – A local man was charged with operating under the influence Thursday after he allegedly struck a pedestrian with his vehicle on Franklin Street at the intersection with Congress Street.

Ralph Field, 60, was driving a gray Toyota Prius shortly before 10 a.m. when he allegedly hit Steven Patten, 55, of Portland. Patten suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, according to Portland police.

Police determined that Field was imparied by a substance other than alcohol but they won’t know for sure what that is until they conduct a urine or blood test.

The cause of the accident is still under investgation and the Portland Police Department is asking anyone who witnessed the accident to contact the traffic unit at 874-8532.
