The stakes keep getting higher on the tennis court and local players and teams are rising to the occasion.

The singles tournament saw Cape Elizabeth’s Matt Gilman make a run to the boys’ final four.

The team tournament is about to commence as well and several local squads earned berths.

Here’s a glimpse:


Gilman was the No. 4 seed and advanced through the second round with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Bangor’s Sam Bolduc, the round of 16 with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Kennebunk’s Josh Behrens and the quarterfinal round with a 6-3, 6-2 win over No. 5 Sam Leeman of Morse. Wednesday, in the semifinals, Gilman met his match, falling to top-seed and eventual champion Jordan Friedland of Lincoln Academy, 2-6, 2-6.

Gilman’s teammate Satchel McCarthy, the No. 7 seed, was a 6-0, 6-0 winner over Ellsworth’s Ben Haslam and a 6-2, 6-0 winner over Oceanside’s Cameron Butler, but then lost, 0-6, 2-6, to eventual finalist Brendan McCarthy of Falmouth in the quarterfinals.

A third Caper, Peter Higgins, the No. 6 seed, beat Dallas Clark of Cony, 6-0, 6-0, then lost to No. 11 Burke Paxton of North Yarmouth Academy in a three-set thriller, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (3), 4-6.

Scarborough’s Jeff Sirocki was a 6-0, 6-4 winner over Bangor’s Mateo Laredo in the first round, but lost, 5-7, 4-6, to Paxton of NYA in the second round.

In girls’ competition, Cape Elizabeth’s Allie Briggs lost, 1-6, 6-7 (7) to Cheverus’ Caty Galligan in the first round. Scarborough’s Ella Mahoney also lost in the first round, 5-7, 2-6, to Waynflete’s Emily White.

Team tournament

Cape Elizabeth and Scarborough’s girls’ teams both earned No. 2 seeds in their respective regions. The Capers went 10-2 and finished second to reigning champion Falmouth. Cape Elizabeth hosted No. 10 Freeport (7-6) in the quarterfinals Thursday. The Capers beat the Falcons, 4-1, in Freeport in the regular season. The Red Storm went 11-1 and finished behind Portland in Western A. Scarborough hosted No. 7 Sanford (8-5) Thursday in its quarterfinal. The Red Storm was a 4-1 winner at the Spartans in the regular season. South Portland wound up 10th, but was ousted, 5-0, by Sanford in Tuesday’s preliminary round to finish 4-9.

On the boys’ side, Cape Elizabeth had a perfect 12-0 season, but that only gave the Capers the No. 2 seed behind Lincoln Academy in Western B. Cape Elizabeth hosted No. 7 Spruce Mountain (7-6) in Thursday’s quarterfinals. The teams didn’t meet this year. In Western A, Scarborough went 7-5 to earn the No. 8 seed. The Red Storm ousted No. 9 Cheverus, 4-1, in a preliminary round match Tuesday. Thursday, Scarborough played at top-ranked, defending champion Gorham (12-0) in the quarterfinals. The Rams won the regular season meeting, 4-1. South Portland got the 10th seed. Tuesday, the Red Riots’ season ended at 3-10 with a 4-1 loss at No. 7 Biddeford.

Looking ahead, the semifinals are Saturday, hosted by the teams with higher seeds. The regional finals are Wednesday of next week at Bates College. The state matches are Saturday, June 8, at the University of Maine in Orono.
