PORTLAND — The wind was blowing out at Hadlock Field Sunday afternoon and the Altoona Curve took advantage. Altoona hit five home runs and romped past the Portland Sea Dogs 13-6 before a crowd of 5,259.
Sea Dogs starter Matt Barnes (3-2) did not make it out of the second inning. He allowed seven runs on a hit-batter and six hits, including three home runs. Barnes had been unbeaten in his last six starts, not allowing more than three earned runs.
Alex Dickerson hit two of the homers, a grand slam off Barnes and a two-run shot off reliever Keith Couch.
The Sea Dogs batters did little with the wind until they scored five runs in the sixth inning, powered by wall-ball doubles from Tony Thomas, Juan Carlos Linares and Christian Vazquez.
Matt Spring, who went 3 for 4, homered in the ninth. Xander Bogaerts had two singles to up his average to .302.
The Sea Dogs (30-25) fly out to Pennsylvania Monday. They will play three games in Erie, starting Tuesday, and then three games in Altoona. The Sea Dogs return to Hadlock on June 11.
