SCARBOROUGH – What figured to be a wide-open Western Class A baseball tournament proved true from the start Thursday when eighth-seeded Portland ousted top-ranked Scarborough 5-4 in a quarterfinal.

Caleb Fraser scattered five hits and struck out six for the Bulldogs (10-8), who scored one run in the first inning, two in the third, another in the fourth and one in the fifth to open a 5-1 lead.

Nick Volger led off the fifth with a single, advanced to third on two infield outs and scored on a Kyle Reichert single.

Scarborough (14-3) pulled within 5-4 with a three-run fifth, including pitcher Ben Greenberg’s two-run homer.

Greenberg gave up 10 hits, struck out seven and walked three.

Portland will play at fourth-seeded Westbrook (14-3) in a semifinal Saturday.

FALMOUTH 5, POLAND 4: Thomas Fortier struck out nine and gave up five hits to lead the second-ranked Yachtsmen (15-2) past 10th-seeded Poland (10-8) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Falmouth.

Addison Foltmer got Falmouth started with an RBI single in the first inning. An error and an infield single by Luke Velas were the keys to a three-run Falmouth rally in the third.

C.J. Martin hit a two-run single during a three-run sixth that brought the Knights within a run.

MARSHWOOD 2, THORNTON ACADEMY 1: Jake Lebel hit a two-run single in the sixth inning and second-seeded Marshwood (14-2) beat seventh-seeded Thornton Academy (9-9) in a Western Class A quarterfinal at South Berwick.

The Trojans scored in the seventh on a sacrifice fly by Matt Rutherford.

Alex McLean pitched six innings to earn the win, giving up four hits with four strikeouts and no walks.

Jeff Gelinas of Thornton struck out six and walked six in a three-hitter.

GREELY 11, FRYEBURG ACADEMY 1: Connor Russell struck out 10 over five innings of two-hit baseball, and the top-seeded Rangers (16-1) went on to down the eighth-seeded Raiders (9-9) in a six-inning Western Class B quarterfinal at Cumberland.

Will Bryant added a 1-2-3 sixth inning with two strikeouts for Greely.

Nick Dunnett hit a two-run double and Drew Hodge added a run-scoring single to give Greely a 10-run lead in the sixth inning.

DIRIGO 4, OLD ORCHARD BEACH 3: Spencer Trenoweth scored on a single by Jack Brown in the seventh inning to lift the top-seeded Cougars (15-2) over the eighth-seeded Seagulls (7-11) in a Western Class C quarterfinal at Dixfield.

Old Orchard Beach broke a scoreless tie with a three-run fourth inning that included RBI singles by Sean McDermott and Timothy Ellis. Dirigo responded with three in the bottom of the inning.

MORSE 7, OAK HILL 1: Trenton Moore had two singles and drove in a pair of runs to lead the third-seeded Shipbuilders (13-4) past the 11th-seeded Raiders (9-9) in a Western Class B quarterfinal at Bath.

WATERVILLE 10, CAMDEN HILLS 4: A.J. Godin worked out of two bases-loaded jams to lead fourth-seeded Waterville (15-3) past fifth-seeded Camden Hills (11-7) in an Eastern Class B quarterfinal at Waterville.

WINTHROP 8, SACOPEE VALLEY 7: The third-seeded Ramblers (13-3) allowed seven runs in the top of the seventh inning, then rallied for four in the bottom half to beat sixth-seeded Sacopee Valley (8-10) in a Western Class C quarterfinal at Winthrop.

With two runners on and two outs, Drew Stratton hit a dribbler down the first-base line and collided with Sacopee Valley pitcher Anthony Haskell, who was trying to field the ball. Stratton got up and reached safely, and pinch-runner Cabot Lancaster and Zach Steele were able to score the tying and winning runs.
