More than 3,400 Central Maine Power Co. customers were without electrical service at 6 p.m. after a series of thunderstorms rolled through southern and central Maine and knocked out power Monday.
Kittery was hardest hit with more than 2,000 customers losing power, according to CMP spokesman John Carroll. At the storms’ peak – about 5 p.m. – more than 5,000 customers had lost power.
The largest concentration of outages occurred in York County.
Carroll said CMP expects to have power restored to all of its customers by Monday night.
The storms moved quickly through the region and packed wind gusts up to 62 mph, said Bob Marine, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gray. There were also reports of pea-size hail.
First responders were called to multiple reports of downed trees and power lines during the storm, which pounded the area for about 45 minutes, the Associated Press reported.
In Kittery, police and fire crews were called to the scene of a tree set on fire by downed power lines.
Marine said the storms are expected to subside Monday night with warm, mild weather expected for Tuesday.
