AUGUSTA — Maine’s secretary of state warns corporations to be aware of a scam by a company named Corporate Records Service, which has sent solicitations seeking a $125 payment to complete an annual minutes requirement statement.
The state was alerted of the scam on Wednesday and sent an alert to corporations throughout the state to beware.
The letter from Corporate Records Service is not being sent on behalf of the secretary of state, officials said. Maine corporations are not required to file corporate minutes with the Secretary of State’s Office.
Corporate Records Service sent out a similar request in January of this year. The company could not be immediately reached for comment.
“At first glance, this solicitation may look official; however, it is important to remember that any official notice a business receives from the Secretary of State’s Office will contain the Maine state seal, the Secretary of State’s name, and contact information for the Bureau of Corporations, Elections and Commissions (CEC),” said Secretary of State Matthew Dunlap.
