ANAHEIM, Calif. – Left-hander Jason Vargas is on the Los Angeles Angels’ 15-day disabled list after a blood clot was found in his left armpit.

The clot was discovered following Vargas’ start against Seattle on Monday, making his move to the DL retroactive to Tuesday. He will seek a second opinion before considering surgery.

Vargas is 6-4 with a 3.65 ERA in his first season with the Angels, who acquired him from the Mariners in the offseason.

TIGERS: Reliever Jose Valverde was designated for assignment, less than two months after the veteran right-hander was brought back to the majors for another chance to be a closer.

Valverde went 0-1 with a 5.59 ERA, converting nine saves in 12 chances. Detroit has 10 days to trade, release or send him outright to the minors.

INDIANS: Closer Chris Perez and first baseman Nick Swisher moved closer to returning from shoulder injuries.

Perez, sidelined since May 27 with a strained rotator cuff, threw a 30-pitch bullpen session Friday.

Swisher, sidelined for a week, took pregame batting practice and could be back in the lineup Saturday.

CARDINALS: Pitcher Chris Carpenter was cleared to resume rehabbing from a lower back injury after the team got outside medical opinions about his comeback from nerve issues.

METS: Left-hander Jonathon Niese was placed on the DL because of a partial tear in his rotator cuff.

Niese left Thursday night’s game at Atlanta in the fourth inning. He is 3-6 with a 4.32 ERA in 14 starts.
