Watson moves to top of leaderboard midway through Travelers Championship

Bubba Watson shot a 3-under-par 67 Friday to take a two-stroke lead over Patrick Reed and Padraig Harrington after two rounds of the Travelers Championship in Cromwell, Conn.

Watson, the 2010 champion, was at 10-under 130.

Four players, including 2007 champion Hunter Mahan, were tied for fourth at 7-under.

LPGA: Mika Miyazato birdied six of 10 holes in the middle of her round and shot a 6-under 65 to earn the first-round lead at the NW Arkansas Championship in Rogers, Ark.

Miyazato was a shot ahead of So Yeon Ryu and Angela Stanford.

EUROPEAN TOUR: Ernie Els shot a 3-under 69 in the second round of the BMW International Open at Munich to maintain his one-stroke lead.

Els was at 12-under 132. He was followed by Matthew Baldwin of England (69) and Alexander Levy of France (68).

CHAMPIONS TOUR: Craig Stadler birdied five of his first 11 holes to jump into a share of the lead with Duffy Waldorf and Bernhard Langer at 5-under-par 67 in the rain-delayed Encompass Championship at Glenview, Ill.


U.S. CHAMPIONSHIPS: Former Madison High runner Matt McClintock broke away from the lead pack midway through the race and won the 10,000-meter junior national championship by a wide margin, finishing with a time of 31 minutes, 14.31 seconds at Des Moines, Iowa.

Only one other runner finished within a minute of McClintock, who just finished his freshman year at Purdue. He’ll represent the U.S. at the Pan Am junior championships in August at Medellin, Colombia.

Ben True of North Yarmouth was one position shy of qualifying for the world championships in the senior 10,000, placing fourth Thursday night in 29:07.26.


COLLEGE WORLD SERIES: Hunter Renfroe hit a three-run homer and Mississippi State (51-18) advanced to the best-of-three championship series with a 4-1 victory over Oregon State (52-13) at Omaha, Neb.

The Bulldogs will face UCLA (47-17), which also won 4-1 against top-seeded North Carolina (59-12). The championship series starts Monday.

NECBL: Evan Ocello hit a go-ahead RBI single in the 10th inning as the Ocean State Waves (5-6) earned a 9-6 win over the Sanford Mainers (5-5) at Goodall Park.

Zander Weil went 4 for 5 with a double, a home run and five RBI for the Mainers.

FCBL: Fran Whitten and Graham McIntire each hit a two-run homer, and Harry Ridge pitched five scoreless innings for the Old Orchard Beach Raging Tide (5-5) in a 6-2 win over the Seacoast Mavericks (5-6) at Portsmouth, N.H.

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Brendon Joyce drove in three runs and Brett Emertz knocked in two as Patriot Insurance (2-3) took a 9-3 win over Aero Heating & Ventilating (1-4) at Standish.

Tim Bradford had two hits and scored the go-ahead run on a groundout in the eighth inning as Yankee Ford beat Lenders Network 8-7 at Deering Oaks.

AMERICAN LEGION: Kevin Descoteaux allowed one run in six innings, and Corey Creeger went 3 for 4 with three runs scored and an RBI to help Saco-Biddeford Savings (2-1) take a 9-2 win over Noble (0-2) at North Berwick.

JUNIOR LEGION: Nick Troiano singled home Alex Livingston with two outs in the bottom of the seventh to give host South Portland (2-1) a 5-4 win over Cape Elizabeth (1-4).

n Josh Richards had three hits and three RBI, and Corey Walker struck out eight for visiting Westbrook in a 13-0 five-inning win over the Windham Merchants (1-2).

Bailey Ryan scored two runs and knocked in two.


EASTBOURNE: American qualifier Jamie Hampton reached the first final of her career when she defeated 2009 champion Caroline Wozniacki 6-7 (8), 7-5, 6-3 in Eastbourne, England.

Hampton will face Elena Vesnina, who beat Yanina Wickmayer 6-2, 6-0.


U-20 WORLD CUP: Spain got two goals apiece from star strikers Jese and Gerard Deulofeu to beat the United States 4-1 at Istanbul on the opening day of the Under-20 World Cup.

The Americans’ goal was scored by Luis Gil from just outside the penalty area in the 77th minute.
