ALTON, N.H. — Two organizations are partnering to raise money to protect trails and habitats at Mt. Major in New Hampshire’s Lakes Region.
Mt. Major’s parking area and summit are owned by the state. The land in between is owned privately.
The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests and the Lakes Region Conservation Trust want to purchase private lands to keep trails open. Some parts of the trails are on private property. The groups plan to purchase 950 acres spread out over four properties, worth about $1.8 million.
The money needs to be raised by Dec. 1 for the “Everybody Hikes Mt. Major” campaign.
Mt. Major has three main trails – Boulder Loop, Mount Major Trail and Brook Trail. The summit offers views of Lake Winnipesaukee and the White Mountains. Many people hike them each year.
“For thousands of people around the region, Mt. Major was the first mountain they climbed, and they’ve since climbed it many times and with their children and grandchildren,” said Don Berry, president of Lakes Region Trust.
