AUGUSTA — Barely a week off probation for having sexually explicit materials, a Monmouth man was caught with 18 movies that included sexually explicit depictions of children under 12.

Raymond Carl LeClair Jr., 47, pleaded guilty to the newest charge of possession of sexually explicit materials in April 2012, and he was sentenced Thursday in Kennebec County Superior Court to eight years in prison, with all but one year suspended, and 12 years of probation.

The prosecutor, Assistant District Attorney Joelle Pratt, and LeClair’s defense attorney, J. Mitchell Flick, jointly recommended the sentence.

“He did marvelously on probation before,” Flick told Justice Nancy Mills, adding that in the interval between the plea and sentencing, LeClair’s behavior had been dramatically improved by medication prescribed by a psychiatrist. “Mr. LeClair and his family members say his life is a lot different while on this drug. He is thinking clearer and more goal-oriented.”

LeClair previously was convicted of two counts of possessing sexually explicit material in 2008 and one count in 2004, all in Androscoggin County Superior Court. In 1998, he was convicted of three counts of visual sexual aggression against a child. He is classified as lifetime registrant on the Maine Sex Offender Registry.

Records from the state Department of Corrections indicate LeClair was on probation until September 2011. The Kennebec County indictment charges him with possessing the movies on Sept. 9, 2011, in Litchfield, where he was living at the time.

“I’m sorry,” LeClair told the judge.

Mills set conditions of probation that ban LeClair from using or possessing Internet-capable devices, and from contact with children under 16.

She said she was accepting the sentence recommendation by the two attorneys because she thought it was fair.

She told LeClair, “The record shows you’ve been trying to deal with this difficulty.” According to reports published in 2009, LeClair was sentenced in Androscoggin County Superior Court to two consecutive 364-day sentences, all suspended, and two years’ probation after being convicted of two charges of possessing sexually explicit material on Nov. 10, 2007.

In May 2010, for violating probation, he was ordered to serve six months of that suspended sentence.

LeClair had been free on bail pending sentencing in the Kennebec County Superior Court charge.
