BOSTON – Boston Bruins General Manager Peter Chiarelli said he’s confident that the team will re-sign goalie Tuukka Rask.

Chiarelli told reporters on a conference call Wednesday that he thinks it will happen by Friday, when Rask can become a restricted free agent. Even if they don’t meet the deadline, the GM said he still feels like he can get a deal done.

Rask allowed just two goals a game this season while leading the Bruins to the Stanley Cup finals. He is 26.

Chiarelli also said he would consider re-signing forward Jaromir Jagr.

The team had decided to part ways with the future Hall of Famer, whom they acquired at the trade deadline. But after Nathan Horton said he wanted to test the free-agent market, that left the Bruins looking for forwards.

Once a high scorer, Jagr had no goals in 22 playoff games after totaling 16 during the regular season with Dallas and Boston.

ISLANDERS: Rick DiPietro is now a former New York goalie after he cleared waivers and had his long contract bought out by the team.

The Islanders used a compliance buyout to remove the final eight years of the goalie’s deal from the club’s salary cap.

New York will pay the 31-year-old DiPietro $1.5 million for each of the next 16 years — double the years left on his original 15-year pact with the Islanders.

The No. 1 pick in the 2000 draft, DiPietro has been limited to 50 NHL games since the 2008-09 season, plagued by multiple concussions, and hip and knee injuries that required surgery.

In 318 career NHL games, all with the Islanders, DiPietro went 130-136-8-28. Only Billy Smith played more games in goal for New York. DiPietro was 2-7 in 10 career playoff appearances.

Last season, DiPietro — the first goalie ever chosen No. 1 in the NHL draft — played in only three games with the Islanders before he was waived and sent to Bridgeport of the AHL.

DiPietro signed a 15-year, $67.5 million deal before the 2006-07 season, but he was never able to live up to expectations.

KINGS: Center Jarret Stoll was hospitalized after suffering a seizure at his Hermosa Beach, Calif., home.

Kings General Manager Dean said he visited Stoll in the hospital and the “bottom line is that he’s fine. Now the issue is what caused it.”

The Kings did not immediately respond to an Associated Press email seeking comment on Stoll’s condition.

The 31-year-old Stoll missed all but the first game of the Kings’ second-round playoff series against the Sharks after suffering a concussion following a hit by San Jose’s Raffi Torres. He returned in time for the Western Conference finals against the Chicago Blackhawks.

Stoll also suffered a concussion during the 2006-07 season while playing for the Edmonton Oilers.

SABRES: Forward Nathan Gerbe was placed on waivers for the purpose of having the final year of his contract bought out, according to Jordan Neumann, the player’s agent.

Gerbe was set to make $1.85 million next season. He had 72 points (29 goals, 43 assists) in 188 career games.

Buffalo also re-signed journeyman forward Matt Ellis to a two-year contract. If Ellis doesn’t play with the Sabres, the team is counting on him to serve as captain at AHL Rochester.

BLACKHAWKS: Steady defenseman Nick Leddy signed a two-year deal.

The 22-year-old restricted free agent played in every game this season, helping the Blackhawks win the Stanley Cup. He had six goals and 12 assists in the regular season, and then had two assists in 23 playoff games.

WILD: Defenseman Tom Gilbert was waived with one season left on his contract for $3 million.

Acquired from Edmonton in early 2012, Gilbert totaled three goals and 15 assists over 63 games with the Wild.

PANTHERS: Veteran defenseman Filip Kuba had the remaining year of his two-year deal bought out.

Kuba, 36, who signed the two-year deal worth $8 million last year, becomes an unrestricted free agent Friday.

BLUES: Restricted free-agent defenseman Kris Russell was placed on waivers after the team extended a qualifying offer, allowing the Blues to retain his rights should he go unclaimed.

Russell, 26, has played in 76 games with the Blues after arriving in a 2011 trade with Columbus. He’s netted five goals and 11 assists.
