SEATTLE – Boston Red Sox left-hander Andrew Miller will have surgery on his injured left foot and likely miss the rest of the season.

Red Sox Manager John Farrell said Monday that Miller has damage to the ligament in the foot, which he hurt while backing up a play at home plate Saturday at Anaheim.

“It’s unlikely he’ll be back this year,” Farrell said.

Miller flew back to Boston on Sunday and was examined Monday by the team’s foot specialist, Dr. George Theodore.

An MRI revealed the damage. No date for the surgery had been scheduled.

“It was when I tried to change momentum to go back up home,” Miller said after the game Saturday. “I watched the ball go by me, and when I went to push off to back up home plate, that’s when I felt it.”

Miller, in his second full season as a reliever for the Red Sox, had a 2.64 ERA while striking out 48 in 302/3 innings.

“The way he has pitched, the importance of that power left-hander, it is (a big loss),” Farrell said.

PHILLIES: Ryan Howard needs surgery to repair a torn meniscus in his left knee and will miss at least 6 to 8 weeks.

Howard, the 2006 NL MVP, went on the disabled list Saturday. An MRI confirmed the tear in his knee. A date for surgery hasn’t been set.

MARINERS: Right-hander Jeremy Bonderman’s comeback with Seattle is over after he was designated for assignment following consecutive poor starts.

The Mariners recalled left-handed reliever Lucas Luetge from Triple-A Tacoma to take Bonderman’s roster spot but the Mariners will still need a starter for Thursday’s game against the Boston Red Sox.

Braun has been out for a month with a bruised right thumb.

ATHLETICS: Oakland recalled former first-round pick Grant Green and designated infielder Adam Rosales for assignment.

METS: Assistant GM John Ricco said left-hander Jonathon Niese has been cleared to start throwing again, while Shaun Marcum had his right hand examined by a specialist in St. Louis and will miss his next scheduled start.

YANKEES: New York added first baseman Travis Ishikawa to its 25-man roster.

The Yankees claimed the 29-year-old off waivers from Baltimore on Sunday. To make room for Ishikawa, New York sent infielder David Adams to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.

DODGERS: Los Angeles placed center fielder Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list with joint inflammation in his troublesome left shoulder.

Manager Don Mattingly says Kemp tried to take early batting practice Monday but experienced more soreness and, with the All-Star break coming up, it didn’t make sense to play short-handed while Kemp heals.
