Lake was simply a scoring machine this spring, tickling the twine over five times per game, earning her rightful place among the finest players in the state.

Lake, who also plays soccer and golf, started playing lacrosse in middle school and joined McAuley’s varsity as a freshman, only to be sidelined by a meniscus injury. As a sophomore, she scored 25 goals and was an honorable mention all-star, but that paled in comparison to the show she put on this season.

Lake, a center, finished with 61 goals (one of the highest productions to be found anywhere in the state) which set a new program record. She added 11 assists and also made her presence felt in the draw circle (45 wins) and on defense (11 interceptions and 22 caused turnovers).

Lake had four goals against Deering, five versus Biddeford, six against Windham and five versus South Portland. McAuley lost its first eight games, but got in the win column versus Sanford, with Lake, not surprisingly, leading the way with nine goals and a pair of assists. She also had four goals in a win over Westbrook and after tallying seven goals in a loss to Bonny Eagle, capped her season with a jawdropping 10 in a win over Noble in the finale.

“It was a fun season, but I’d have rather had more team success,” Lake said.

Many elite players are criticized for not having a strong left hand, but Lake, a lefty, has no such problems. She is working on further developing her right hand and credits her natural speed for helping her succeed in such a fast sport.

Lake, who is also a top tier student, hopes to reach 100 career goals and lead the Lions to their first playoff berth since 2005 before leaving for college. She’s looking at several top schools. She’s undecided on a major and will likely play lacrosse at the club level.

Her final act figures to be something to behold. Katherine Lake, McAuley’s Spring Athlete of the Year, is already one of the state’s best and is only getting better.

Coach Jo Ellen Rand’s comment: “Katherine had an outstanding year. She was the heart and soul of our team. She is a great leader and our playmaker with her left-handed shot and all the moves she made toward the goal. Katherine is a coach’s dream. She would do anything I asked and she was one of the main reasons we got the Sportsmanship Award because she was a role model for the younger players to look up to. She is always positive and she always told the players to give 110 percent and never give up. She was the main reason we won the games we won this year. I am so happy Katherine will be around for another year because she is the player we will look for to be our leader and our playmaker again.”
