DETROIT — Alex Rios tied an American League mark with six hits in a nine-inning game and Adam Dunn hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Justin Verlander in the eighth to lift the Chicago White Sox to an 11-4 win over the Detroit Tigers on Tuesday.

Rios singled in the first, tripled in the third and also singled twice in the eighth inning. He also singled in the fifth and ninth innings.

Rios hit his first single in the eighth inning and stole second and scored on Dunn’s 24th homer that put the White Sox ahead 3-1. He added an RBI single later in the eighth.

Rios became the 32nd AL player to have six hits in a nine-inning game and the first in franchise history since Lance Johnson pulled off the feat in 1995 at Minnesota.

Dayan Vicideo’s second homer of the game helped the White Sox score seven runs in the eighth inning, and they scored three more runs in the ninth to surpass a season high for scoring.

Miguel Cabrera hit his 29th homer, an impressive blast to left-center, to give him a major league high 92 RBI and .363 batting average.

RANGERS 8, ORIOLES 4: Adrian Beltre went 4 for 4 with two homers and a season-high five RBI to help surging Texas win at Baltimore.

Beltre hit a solo shot in the second inning and a three-run drive in the fifth, both off Zach Britton (2-3). Beltre has six home runs in his last six games and is batting .488 (21 for 43) during an 11-game hitting streak that began on June 28.

 

INDIANS 3, BLUE JAYS 0: Ubaldo Jimenez and three relievers combined on a shutout as Cleveland topped visiting Toronto.

RAYS 4, TWINS 1: Chris Archer pitched six strong innings, and Matt Joyce and Kelly Johnson drove in two runs apiece to help host Tampa Bay extend its winning streak to a season-best six games.

 

ROYALS 3, YANKEES 1: James Shields wiggled out of early trouble and got home run help from Billy Butler and David Lough as Kansas City sent host New York to its third straight loss.

NATIONAL LEAGUE

PHILLIES 4, NATIONALS 2: Cole Hamels threw eight sharp innings, Michael Young hit a two-run double and host Philadelphia won its third straight.

Jayson Werth hit a solo homer for Washington. The defending NL East champs have lost two straight and are only 11/2 games ahead of third-place Philadelphia.

BRAVES 6, MARLINS 4: Justin Upton homered, doubled twice and scored three runs to help visiting Atlanta earn its 27th comeback win.

 

BREWERS 2, REDS 0: Wily Peralta tossed a three-hitter for his first career shutout and Logan Schafer hit his first homer, a two-run shot that helped Milwaukee top visiting Cincinnati.

INTERLEAGUE

CUBS 7, ANGELS 2: Alfonso Soriano hit two of the Cubs’ season-high five home runs and Travis Wood earned his first win in nearly six weeks in the Chicago’s win at home.

Anthony Rizzo, Starlin Castro and Darwin Barney also homered for Chicago.

 

CARDINALS 9, ASTROS 5: Adam Wainwright picked up his National League-tying 12th win with seven scoreless innings and Matt Holliday hit his team-high 13th home run to lead St. Louis over visiting Houston.

 

ATHLETICS 2, PIRATES 1: Dan Straily pitched two-hit ball into the seventh inning, Brandon Moss hit a two-run homer and Oakland won at Pittsburgh.
