The stars of the spring sports season, circa 2013, were plentiful and many of the best and brightest from Forecaster Country were honored as all-stars and academic all-stars following the season.

Here’s a breakdown:

Baseball

All three baseball teams made the playoffs this spring and each had players honored as all-stars.

In the Southwestern Maine Activities Association, the York County All-Conference team featured Scarborough pitchers Ben Greenberg and Jayme Lappin, utilityman Brendan Hall and Greenberg at third base, while the Cumberland County All-Conference team included South Portland utilityman Nick Whittten.

The York County All-Defensive team featured Scarborough’s Hall at second base, shortstop Nick Bagley and outfielder Sam Terry.

The Cumberland County All-Rookie team included South Portland first baseman Dillon Burns and pitcher Zac Marles.

Scarborough’s Greenberg was named the league’s Most Valuable Player and the winner of the Edson Hadlock Award as the league’s Most Valuable Pitcher. He was also the winner of the Gatorade Player of the Year Award for Maine.

Scarborough’s Damian Ramsdell and Aaron Ravin and South Portland’s Burns qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

In the Western Maine Conference, Cape Elizabeth senior catcher Seth Dobieski and senior utilityman Zach Culver made the second team.

Dobieski also qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Dobieski, Scarborough’s Bagley and South Portland’s Whitten played for the “West” team in the Senior All-Star Game.

Scarborough’s Greenberg and South Portland’s Robert Graff played in the Underclass Showcase.

Scarborough’s Ryan Jones served as a coach in the Maine vs. New Hampshire Senior All-Star Game as well as in the Underclass Showcase.

Softball

Forecaster Country produced some of the best softball teams in the state, including the eventual Class A state champion. Scarborough, along with Cape Elizabeth and South Portland, had several players honored.

In the SMAA, the first-team featured Scarborough senior utility Erin Giles and junior pitcher Alyssa Williamson and South Portland senior pitcher Erin Bogdanovich, sophomore second baseman Laurine German and senior shortstop Danica Gleason.

Scarborough’s Marisa O’Toole and South Portland’s Olivia Indorf made the second team.

Scarborough’s Megan Murrell and South Portland’s Emily Gray were honorable mention selections.

Scarborough’s Giles, O’Toole and Grace Farnkoff and South Portland’s Gray qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

South Portland’s Gleason was named the SMAA Player of the Year, Offensive Player of the Year, Defensive Player of the Year and was named Maine’s Gatorade Player of the Year.

In the WMC, Cape Elizabeth junior Emma O’Rourke and sophomore Ashley Tinsman made the first team.

Juniors Mary Perkins and Kate Rabasca made the second team.

Tinsman was named the WMC Class B Player of the Year.

Scarborough’s Giles and O’Toole and South Portland’s Bogdanovich and Gleason played for the A/B West team in the Senior All-Star Game.

Scarborough’s Murrell, Williamson and Brenna Kent and South Portland’s Indorf played for the West in the Junior Underclass Game.

Cape Elizabeth’s Tinsman, Scarborough’s Maggie Murphy and South Portland’s German played for the West in the Underlcass (freshman/sophomore) All-Star Game.

Scarborough’s Giles and O’Toole and South Portland’s Bogdanovich and Gleason played in the Maine vs. New Hampshire Senior All-Star Game.

Boys’ lacrosse

Two local boys’ lacrosse teams were crowned champions this spring and there was also a lot of honor bestowed on individual players.

In the SMAA, the first team included senior utility Dalton Finley, junior defenseman Brendan Smith and senior attack John Wheeler of Class A champion Scarborough and South Portland junior middie Duncan Preston.

Scarborough junior middie Chris Cyr and senior defenseman Nate McLellan and South Portland junior middie Joey Babbidge and junior attack Thomas Leddy were second teamers.

Scarborough senior goalie David Pearson and South Portland sophomore goalie T-Moe Hellier were honorable mention selections.

South Portland’s Tom Fiorini was named SMAA Coach of the Year.

In the WMC, Class B champion Cape Elizabeth placed senior attack Alex Bornick and senior defenseman Adam Haversat on the first team.

Senior middie Cam Wilson, senior defenseman Brandon Negele, junior longstick middie Trevor Gale and sophomore defenseman Curtis Alexander made the second team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Bornick (one goal), Haversat (two goals) and Wilson (two goals, one assist) and Scarborough’s Finley (one goal) and Wheeler (one goal, three assists) helped the “Penobscot” team to a 17-16 win over “Abenaki” in the Senior All-Star Game. Cape Elizabeth’s Ben Raymond served as coach. South Portland’s Colton Gervais and Cody Munson played for Abenaki. Fiorini was the Abenaki coach.

In the inaugural Underclass All-Star Showcase, Cape Elizabeth’s Griffin Thoreck and Scarborough’s Austin Doody and Smith helped Atlantic Sportswear to a 15-14 victory over LaxPros, which included Cape Elizabeth’s Trevor Gale, Scarborough’s Andrew Farrington, Nate Howard and Christian Neelon and South Portland’s Hellier and Preston. Scarborough’s Joe Hezlep coached Atlantic Sportswear.

Cape Elizabeth’s Bornick and Haversat and Scarborough’s Wheeler were named All-Americans.

Girls’ lacrosse

On the girls’ side, the WMC first team included Cape Elizabeth senior midfielder Lauren Steidl and senior defender Jane Coffrin.

Junior attack Hannah Newhall and sophomore defender Melissa Rudberg made the second team.

Coffrin, Steidl, Emily Spidle and Jenna Wallace all qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

In the SMAA, Scarborough midfielder Jess Meader and defender Ashley Ronzo made the first team.

Scarborough attack Ainsley Jamieson and midfielder Avery Pietras were second teamers.

Scarborough goalie Meg Kirsch and South Portland goalie Lily SanGiovanni were honorable mention selections.

Scarborough’s Kaitlin Prince and South Portland’s Ali Tolan made the All-Rookie team.

Scarborough’s Kirsch and South Portland’s Lani Edwards and Jenna Wing qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

Scarborough’s Meader (three goals), Kirsch (four saves) and Ronzo, along with South Portland’s Edwards (two goals), helped the “Red” team to a 24-13 victory in the Senior All-Star Game. Cape Elizabeth’s Coffrin, Steidl (three goals) and Talley Perkins (two goals) played for the “Navy” team.

Cape Elizabeth’s Steidl was an All-American for the second year in a row.

Cape Elizabeth’s Coffrin and Steidl, Sarah Flaherty, Emily Spidle and Jenna Wallace, Scarborough’s Kirsch, Meader, Ronzo, Pietras and Sarah Martens and South Portland’s Edwards and Wing were Academic All-Americans.

Outdoor track

Scarborough’s boys’ outdoor track team won its first Class A championship and had several players qualify for the SMAA all-star team.

The first team included Scarborough’s Ryan Jamison (200), Robert Hall (two-mile) and the Red Storm’s 400, 1,600 and 3,200 relays.

Jamison (100), Colin Tardiff (mile), Will Fowler (two-mile), Kevin Manning (pole vault) and Hugh McSorley (shot put) and South Portland’s Michael Cuesta (triple jump) were second teamers.

Honorable mentions included Scarborough’s Alex Karam (800), Cameron Langlois (100 hurdles) and Manning (discus) and South Portland’s Ben Michaud (long jump) and Joe Zelasko (shot put).

In the WMC, the Division I first team included Cape Elizabeth’s Liam Simpson (mile).

Cape Elizabeth’s Ian Andolsek, Griffin Carpenter and Zachary Hillman qualified for the WMC All-Academic team.

On the girls’ side, in the SMAA, Scarborough’s Cailley Ledue (pole vault) was a second teamer.

Honorable mentions included Scarborough’s Sarah Rinaldi (triple jump) and South Portland’s Shannon Conley (800).

In the WMC, Cape Elizabeth’s Christina Kouros was a first teamer in the 800 wheelchair and 1,600 wheelchair.

Cape Elizabeth’s Anna Brogan and Emma Inhorn made the WMC All-Academic team.

Boys’ tennis

Cape Elizabeth’s boys’ tennis team finished atop the Class B world and Matt Gilman and Peter Higgins were named to the WMC singles first team.

Satchel McCarthy made the singles second team.

Eli Breed, Luke Gilman, Michael Mills and Sam Sherman all made the doubles team.

In the SMAA, Scarborough’s Jeff Sirocki made the singles first team.

South Portland’s Ben Burkey and Ryan Pelletier qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

Girls’ tennis

On the girls’ side, in the SMAA, Scarborough’s Ella Mahoney made the singles second team.

Scarborough’s Maria Philbrick and Katie Wahrer were doubles first teamers.

Scarborough’s Carly Hughes and Grace Whelan made the doubles second team.

Scarborough’s Philbrick and Wahrer, along with South Portland’s Paige Doane and Brianna Woodward, qualified for the SMAA All-Academic team.

In the WMC, Cape Elizabeth’s Catie MacDonald was a singles first team selection.

Allie Briggs made the singles second team.

Kate Miklavic and Kisa Tabery were doubles all-stars.
