LISBON — Fans of a peculiar soft drink are showing they have Moxie this weekend.

The annual Moxie Festival in Lisbon started in 1982 to pay homage to the unusual beverage that was concocted by a Mainer in the 1870s. Moxie is now the state’s official soft drink.

Hundreds of spectators lined Lisbon streets Saturday for a parade, and the 5K Moxie Road race set an attendance record. Sunday’s highlight was a river race.

The logo for this year’s festival was based on a drawing by a Lisbon High School student based on the theme, “Moxie: A Maine Tradition.” It featured a deer with ornaments depicting a lighthouse, lobster, pine tree, moose and can of Moxie dangling from its antlers.
