On June 25, Yarmouth experienced a gas explosion on Gables Drive that resulted in the loss of one life, several injuries, and approximately 20 buildings that were either damaged or destroyed. This catastrophe required significant mutual aid from the surrounding fire, ambulance, and police agencies. The incident was handled professionally by all involved and we are grateful for the response of our neighboring first responders.

As the hours passed we would learn that our community responds with kindness and compassion when disaster strikes. The business community showed a tremendous amount of support and also provided meals for those affected: the residents, mutual aid first responders, and local emergency services. We cannot express our thanks enough for their supplying food and drinks during this incident.

A community that comes together during a disaster is a great community in which to live and work. On that day, the random acts of kindness from strangers anxiously willing to help their neighbors were amazing. At one point the fire station members were cooking meals for those affected and a citizen donated toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap, and clothing for those who had just been displaced from their homes.

On behalf of both Yarmouth Fire Rescue and the Police Department please accept our sincere gratitude and deep appreciation for your support. It is reassuring to know that our community will be there to support our agencies when a disaster occurs.
