The Phoenix Coyotes, the NHL parent of the Portland Pirates, signed defenseman David Rundblad to a two-year contract, it was announced Monday.

Phoenix also signed defenseman Mark Louis to a two-year, two-way contract and defenseman Mathieu Brodeur and forwards Brett Hextall and Brandon McMillan to one-year, two-way deals.

The 6-2, 195-pound Rundblad spent most of last season with the Pirates, collecting nine goals and 30 assists to lead all Portland defensemen in scoring. In eight games as a Phoenix call-up, he had one assist.

Selected by the St. Louis Blues during the first round of the 2009 NHL entry draft, Rundblad has one goal and seven assists in 38 NHL games with the Coyotes and the Ottawa Senators.

Last season, the 6-4, 230-pound Louis, who played 23 games for the Pirates during the 2011-12 season following his fourth season at St. Francis Xavier University in Nova Scotia, had three assists and 111 penalty minutes in 61 games with Portland.

A native of Montreal, the 6-6, 215-pound Brodeur, now entering his fourth professional season, had three goals and 16 assists in 65 games with the Pirates last season.

The 5-10, 190-pound Hextall collected nine goals and six assists in his second season with the Pirates.

He is the son of former NHL goalie Ron Hextall, who was recently named assistant general manager and head of hockey operations of the Philadelphia Flyers after years in the Los Angeles Kings’ front office.

The 5-11, 190-pound McMillan, who came to the Coyotes in a trade with the Anaheim Ducks last April, was scoreless in five games with the Pirates last season.

In 41 games with the Norfolk Admirals, he scored eight goals and had five assists.

While playing parts of three NHL seasons with Anaheim, McMillan scored 11 goals and had 15 assists in 91 games.

 

JAROMIR JAGR reportedly has a deal with the Devils.

According to ESPN.com, the 41-year-old future Hall of Famer, who finished last season in Boston, agreed to a one-year deal for $4 million.

 

MIKE BABCOCK will return as coach of Canada’s Olympic team.

The Detroit Red Wings coach will have the St. Louis Blues’ Ken Hitchcock, Dallas Stars’ Lindy Ruff and Boston Bruins’ Claude Julien as assistants in Sochi, Hockey Canada announced Monday.

Julien is the only newcomer to the staff that led Canada to a gold medal at the 2010 Olympics in Vancouver.

 

TORONTO DEFENSEMAN Carl Gunnarsson signed a three-year deal, avoiding salary arbitration.

In 224 career regular-season games, all with the Maple Leafs, the 26-year-old defenseman has 12 goals and 57 assists with 58 penalty minutes.

 

WINNIPEG CENTER Bryan Little agreed to a five-year, $23.5 million contract.

The 25-year-old Little plays on Winnipeg’s top line with captain Andrew Ladd and Blake Wheeler. He had seven goals and 25 assists in 48 games last season.
