FREEPORT – LL Bean will host a day-long free event for children and families Saturday, July 27, featuring live entertainment, games, interactive activities and craft making. The event, dubbed Kidsfest, is part of the L.L. Bean Summer in the Park series, a three-month celebration that also includes the outdoor retailer’s Concert in the Park series.

“This is geared toward kids and families and geared toward reigniting folks love for the outdoors ,” said Kathy Whitney, a Bean spokeswoman. “All events are free and run the spectrum from comedy to fly tying.”

The event kicks off at 10 a.m. at the L.L. Bean Discovery Park on Main Street, and activities run concurrently throughout the day until winding down at 4 p.m. This being L.L. Bean, the outdoors play a significant role in the event, and kids will have an opportunity to try their hand at knot tying and also take part in a bicycle skills challenge. Maine-based coffee roaster Coffee By Design will give kids a chance to make their own smoothies via a specially designed bike that whips the drink through pedal power.

“The interactive component is important as we want kids to think and be outside,” said Whitney. “We started Kidsfest in 2010 and have brought this family favorite back by popular demand each year since.”

On the entertainment side, comedian Brent McCoy will perform his show, the Real McCoy, an act that combines “circus tricks with lightning wit,” according to his website. The Freeport-based Tardy Brothers will be on hand to mix things up with their juggling act, and for the environmentally minded, singer Matt Loosigian will perform his music that is centered on environmental stewardship and peace.

For parents and children interested in making their own kites, an actor portraying Mary Poppins will be on hand and on loan from the Maine State Music Theatre to help attendees design their own kites.

L.L. Bean Kidsfest will also feature geocaching, an outdoor activity where participants use a Global Positioning System receiver to hide and seek containers, called “geocaches” or simply “caches,” that will be spread across the downtown campus of the retailer. If all of the activities have participants needing a break, a yoga session is also planned for the afternoon, with mats provided.

“There’s something for everyone,” said Whitney.
