MOUNT VERNON — A pickup truck, boat and trailer were burned intentionally and several houses were vandalized on a camp road near Echo Lake early Wednesday morning, police and fire officials said.
The Maine State Police and the Office of the State Fire Marshal are investigating the incidents of vandalism, which took place between 3 a.m. and 4:30 a.m. Wednesday in Mount Vernon, Sgt. Jeffrey Beach, of the Maine State Police, said in a news release.
The pickup was destroyed, and because much of the aluminum on the boat melted, it is also probably a total loss, said Sgt. Ken Grimes, of the fire marshal’s office.
In an email to town residents Thursday, Fayette Town Manager Mark Robinson said vandals “poured gas and torched” the truck, boat and trailer. Grimes said he couldn’t discuss the cause of the blaze.
Also, several homes along the road, which begins just across from the Fayette Country Store on Route 17 and juts onto a peninsula on Echo Lake, were vandalized with spray-painted graffiti saying “2013 Bears,” Beach said. Maranacook Community High School’s mascot is the black bear.
Combined, Beach said the incidents caused several thousand dollars’ worth of damage. Investigators collected evidence at the scene that is being processed. State police are asking those with tips on the incidents to call 624-7076.
