The summer months are overflowing with special events and activities – we get notices every day of programs and happenings that are especially for seniors. Here are some recent items for this part of southern Maine:

Catered lunch at Unity Gardens – On Thursday, Aug. 8, the Community Cafe? will have a catered lunch at noon, at Unity Gardens senior housing on Tandberg Trail, Windham. The menu includes grilled chicken and gravy, mashed potato, vegetable, rolls, apple pie and beverages. Donation is $5. Raffles, including a 50/50 will also be held. The meal is catered by Al’s Catering of Scarborough. Call Virginia Billings at 892-3891 for reservations or information. A reminder that Meals on Wheels are served from Windham five days a week to Windham, Gray, New Gloucester, Standish and Raymond. Call 800-400-6325 to find out more. The Community Cafe? is open 9:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday.

Friday, Aug. 9 – An AARP Driver Safety class for drivers age 50 and older will be presented at the AARP State office, 1685 Congress St., Portland, from 9 a.m.-1:30 p.m. Registration deadline is Aug. 2 The registration fee is $12 for AARP members, $14 for others. To register, phone John Hammon, AARP volunteer instructor, at 655-4943. Class size is limited and registration no later than Aug.2 is recommended. Additional classes at this location in Portland will be presented on Sept 13, Oct. 11 and Nov 8. August at the Lakes Region Senior Center, 40 Acorn St, Little Falls School, Gorham – Tuesday, Aug. 13, noon, merits of massage therapy will be conducted by Virginia Purcell from Heaven & Earth Day Spa and Wellness Center. A light lunch will be served. From those attending, several lucky names will be drawn to receive a free10 minute neck and shoulder massage. To be included in this free event call Marge 892-4955 to reserve your spot. Monday, Aug. 19, noon luncheon. Variety of baked beans, hot dogs, salads, rolls and beverage. Dessert will be pie and ice cream. August birthdays will be recognized. Donation of $4 is suggested.

Monday, Aug. 19, noon – Catered lunch and program, Blue Point Congregational Church, 236 Pine Point Road, Scarborough. Seniors barbecue and program on oyster farming with Abigail Carroll of Nonesuch Oysters. The catered lunch is sponsored by Southern Maine Agency on Aging. For those 60 and older, the suggested donation is $6 (bring proof of age.) Not 60 yet? Come anyway for an $8 donation. Reservations required by Aug. 15 with Sue at 883-8151 or email susanjbauer@yahoo.com. Let her know if you need a ride.

Wireless Wednesdays – Every Wednesday from a-11 a.m. at Walker Memorial Library in Westbrook. People of all ages are welcome to bring their tech issues to Chris Dorman. Chris makes a pot of coffee and there are some regulars every week. Almost everyone who comes to the class is a senior. Attendees bring their individual needs and they get one-on-one attention with the added bonus of a coffee club-type social atmosphere. Attendees do not have to be Westbrook residents or library cardholders – anyone is welcome! People bring in e-readers, digital cameras, notebook computers, iPads, iPhones, Android devices, anything. The eldest attendee is 90, and she came in wanting to know about email.
