BRUNSWICK — Fortyseven local veterans of the Korean War received honors and applause to commemorate the 60th anniversary of the armistice that halted fighting.
The July 27 event at Evergreen Senior Citizen Club was one of five statewide on what Gov. Paul LePage proclaimed Korean War Veteran Recognition Day.
Maine Air National Guard Col. Eric W. Lind presented veterans with medals and certificates signed by LePage.
Six Brunswick men died in action in Korea: Paul C. Owen, U.S. Army; Wilfred J. Bernier, Cpl., USMC; Fred C. Berry, Jr., Cpl., U.S. Army; William C. Clark, Sgt., USMC; William E. Fortin, PFC, U.S.Army; and Robert E. Hallowell, PFC, U.S. Army.
Six local Purple Heart recipients also were recognized for being wounded in action: Theodore Gaudreau, James E. Johnson, Chester McMahan, Ardine Pinkham, Jr., Gilbert Ormsby and Michael S. Toth Sr.
