OLD ORCHARD BEACH – Old Orchard Beach has concluded its search for a new town manager, announcing that it intends to hire Kennebunkport’s town manager.

Larry Mead, a former Portland assistant city manager, is the first major hire by the new Old Orchard Beach Town Council.

The previous council fired Mark Pearson, the last town manager, in a move that divided the town. It led to a recall election, during which six of the seven town councilors were replaced.

Mead, who has served as Kennebunkport’s town manager since 2006, will start his new job Sept. 16.

Mead will be paid an annual salary of $105,000.

V. Louise Reid, Old Orchard Beach’s assistant town manager, made the announcement late Tuesday night in a news release. Reid said that Mead and current interim town manager, Robert Peabody Jr., were the two finalists.

Town councilors had interviewed the finalists – 21 candidates applied for the post – in private prior to Tuesday night’s regular town council meeting.

Council Chairman Shawn O’Neill announced at the meeting that the council intends to hire Mead. Councilors will vote to confirm Mead’s appointment at their Aug. 20 meeting.

Mead moved to Old Orchard Beach about a year ago.
