The family of a 2-year-old girl who died earlier this week of unknown causes will be opening an account at Key Bank to help raise money for the child’s funeral.
According to police, Madeline Negron was found dead in her playpen, where she slept, on Monday. She was living with her parents, Jessica Joy and Raoul Negron, at 10 Cross St.
Negron was last seen alive when she was put to bed on Sunday evening. No foul play was immediately suspected, according to a press release sent out by the Maine Department of Public Safety, but the state police investigate all deaths of children under the age of 3.
On Wednesday morning, both parents were at the house, but chose to speak through a family friend. According to the friend, who did not want to be identified, Madeline was happy and playing the night before her death, although the state medical examiner told the family it appeared the child was on the verge of getting sick because her lungs were swollen and she had been running a fever.
More tests have been ordered by the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Augusta, said Mark Belserene, an office administrator, after an initial autopsy was completed on Tuesday. The report was pending further study. Belserene said a report could be released as early as the end of the month.
The family would like to place a small angel with lyrics to “Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star,” Madeline’s favorite song, on the gravestone. Those interested in donating to the family can do so at any Key Bank branch.
Blais & Hay Funeral Home is handling the arrangements, though no time or date had been finalized by the American Journal’s deadline Wednesday.
