Olivia Smith became the second McAuley High basketball player this year to announce she’ll be playing in NCAA Division I. Smith, a 6-foot-3 forward/center, verbally committed this week to play at Darmouth College in Hanover, N.H.

Dartmouth is a member of the Ivy League. She joins Allie Clement, who announced she will play at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Both Smith and Clement are entering their senior years at McAuley.

They’re expected to sign national letters of intent in November.

Smith averaged 10 points and seven rebounds on a well-balanced Class A state championship team last season. She added 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals.

Smith scored 20 points in the state final against Bangor as the Lions won their third straight Class A championship.

Smith is recovering from ACL surgery in June after getting injured in May during an AAU game. McAuley Coach Bill Goodman said he hopes to have Smith back by January.

“There’s really nothing Olivia can’t do on the basketball court,” said Goodman. “She has speed, height and a great attitude. She has improved every year. Olivia pushes herself in the classroom and on the court. She’ll become a better player in college.”
