Bolt beats rain, Gatlin in reclaiming 100-meter title

Olympic champion Usain Bolt restored order to the world of sprinting Sunday, regaining the 100-meter world championship title he lost through a false start two years ago.

Despite a slow start in the pouring rain, the Jamaican steadily caught up with 2004 Olympic champion Justin Gatlin. He then left the American behind with a trademark late burst of speed that still no one can match.

He won in 9.77 seconds in Moscow while Gatlin crossed second in 9.85. Nesta Carter of Jamaica took the bronze in 9.95.

• Ashton Eaton of the United States won the decathlon world championship title to add to his Olympic gold medal.

Eaton had a comfortable lead heading into the final event of the two-day competition and cruised home in the 1,500-meter race to secure his second major title in two years.

The world-record holder collected 8,809 points to finish ahead of Michael Schrader of Germany (8,670) and Damian Warner of Canada (8,512), who both won their first major medals.

n Olympic champion Brittney Reese of the United States won her third straight long jump world title, holding off Blessing Okagbare of Nigeria.

Reese reached the final as the last qualifier but jumped 23 feet on her second attempt to beat Okagbare by less than an inch.

BASEBALL

TWILIGHT LEAGUE: Todd Keneborus scored on a single by Matt Verrier in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift Lenders Network to a 5-4 win over Yankee Ford in the first game of the best-of-three championship series at Deering Oaks.

Lenders Network tied it in the seventh on a solo homer by Chris Bernard, who had three hits.

Kyle Randall struck out four in three shutout innings for the win. He also had two hits and an RBI.

Alan White had a two-run homer among three hits for Yankee Ford.

Game 2 will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at Deering Oaks.

TENNIS

ROGERS CUP: Serena Williams won the Rogers Cup for the third time, routing unseeded Romanian Sorana Cirstea 6-2, 6-0 in the final at Toronto.

The world’s top-ranked woman captured her eighth WTA title of the year and 54th of her career. Williams, who also won the Rogers Cup in 2001 and 2011, has lost only one match since March, a stunning early exit at Wimbledon.

n Rafael Nadal beat Milos Raonic 6-2, 6-2 in the men’s final at Montreal, spoiling Raonic’s bid to become the first Canadian winner in the event in 55 years.

Nadal claimed his third Rogers Cup title. The Spanish star also won in 2005 and 2008.

GOLF

U.S. WOMEN’S AMATEUR: Emma Talley won the U.S. Women’s Amateur, beating Yueer Cindy Feng 2 and 1 at the Country Club of Charleston in South Carolina.

Talley, the 19-year-old Princeton, Ky., player coming off her freshman season at Alabama, moved in front for good when she rolled in a 12-foot birdie putt on No. 10, the 28th hole of the match.

BASKETBALL

WNBA: Crystal Langhorne scored 18 points and the Washington Mystics held on for a 74-63 victory over the visiting Connecticut Sun.

• Elena Delle Donne forced overtime with a clutch 3-pointer and had a career-high 32 points to lead the host Chicago Sky to a 94-86 victory over the Minnesota Lynx.

• Cappie Pondexter scored 33 points and the New York Liberty earned an 88-82 victory over the host Atlanta Dream.

• Diana Taurasi had 20 points and seven assists to lead the Phoenix Mercury to a 77-56 win over the visiting Tulsa Shock.

SOCCER

COMMUNITY SHIELD: Robin van Persie scored twice to reinforce his status as Manchester United’s leading striker during Wayne Rooney’s absence in a 2-0 victory over Wigan.

MLS: Landon Donovan scored his fourth career MLS hat trick, but Blas Perez scored in the 86th minute to lift host FC Dallas into a 3-3 tie with the Los Angeles Galaxy.
