MANCHESTER, N.H. — The police department in Manchester, N.H., is holding a community meeting next week to address a spike in burglaries in July.
Police say they registered 148 burglaries last month, exceeding the 90 recorded in July 2012.
Police said most of the burglaries happened during the day at residences and that items taken include laptops, iPads, iPods, checkbooks and cash.
WMUR-TV reports police suspect that drug use is playing a role in many of the break-ins.
On Monday morning, Tiffany Doucet was surprised by a burglar who walked into her second-floor bedroom as she was checking email on her phone. Her husband had just left for work, and when she heard some noise, she thought he had returned.
“The guy got to the top of my stairs and he looked at me and I’m sitting in my bed,” she told WMUR. “He looks right at me, and he’s like, ‘How are you?’ and I was like, ‘What are you doing in my house?’ In that moment, I think I froze. I didn’t know what to do.”
The man fled, taking her wallet, checkbook and iPad. She was not hurt.
The meeting is scheduled for 6 p.m. Sept. 5 at the Manchester Police Athletic League building.
