SCARBOROUGH — Madeline K. Maus, 92, died Aug. 23.

Maus grew up in New York City after her midwestern parents moved there to further her father’s musical career.

Among the major influences in her life were the summers she spent as a child and teenager at a camp in Maine, and the time spent as part of a young people’s group in New York. Singing, whether at camp, with fellow Girl Scouts, or in several choruses, was always important to her. She had a song in her heart to share on any occasion.

After graduation from high school, she worked for a press-clipping bureau and with the Association of National Advertisers in New York City for over eight years.

During World War II, she married her Victor Schlich, who was serving with the U.S. Navy. After his return home, an unusual opportunity brought them to live in Maine.

He began a career as a reporter and copywriter for a Portland newspaper before becoming a writer and anchor of Portland’s first TV station, WPMT. Later he started the Adventures Inc. advertising agency in Portland, and worked as a freelance writer for numerous publications.

Throughout this time, she was busy with their two children and volunteer activities. Schlich spent several years as a Cub Scout den mother, and served for more than 50 years in many capacities with the Girl Scouts. Later she manned a WGME hotline, helped at the local library and in the Greater Portland chapter of the AARP.

Madeline and Vic enjoyed traveling throughout their 60-year marriage. During retirement they participated in numerous Elderhostels, meeting and living among people from various parts of the United States. One of her greatest pleasures was writing to friends and relatives in distant places. Reading was also a favorite hobby, and libraries provided countless hours of enjoyment.

After her husband’s passing in 2004, she became reacquainted with a longtime friend, Albert Maus, while visiting in California. Later they corresponded, and  married in 2007, thus forming extended families in several areas of the country. The couple greatly enjoyed visits to and from their grown children and their families.

She is survived by her husband, Albert Maus; daughter Nancy Tarkinson and husband Charles Tarkinson Jr., of Scarborough; son Stephen Schlich and wife Kit Schlich, of Petaluma, Calif.; three grandsons, Andrew, Chad and Daniel and his wife Hannah Tarkinson; three great-granddaughters, one great-grandson, and two great-great-grandsons.

Maus family relatives include Laura Lazour, Carla Maus, Brian Maus and Lynn Day as well as spouses, children and grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make contributions in her memory may send them to the Scarborough Public Library, 48 Gorham Road, Scarborough, ME 04074.

Services will be held at a later date.
