CONWAY, N.H. — A New Hampshire man faces misdemeanor assault charges after police said he turned up the volume inside his SUV so high it caused hearing damage to another man in the vehicle.

WMWV-FM reports the charges against 41-year-old Jason Cotton of Conway stem from a July incident at a North Conway car wash. Police said Cotton invited Nordel Gagnon inside his SUV to listen to its customized, high-powered sound system with extra-large speakers.

Gagnon said he quickly got out of the SUV after hearing a loud blast, worrying the sound might have injured his ears. It wasn’t immediately clear what the two were listening to.

A doctor confirmed Gagnon experienced severe tinnitus and acute hearing loss.

It wasn’t known if Cotton had a lawyer.
