ALFRED – A registered sex offender accused of raping a girl in her early teens after giving her alcohol in April has been indicted by a York County grand jury.

Arthur Grant Jr., 43, of 46 Hill St., Saco, was indicted on one Class A felony, gross sexual assault; one Class B felony, gross sexual assault by employing alcohol; one Class C felony, sexual abuse of a minor; and two misdemeanors, furnishing liquor to a minor and allowing a minor to consume alcohol.

Grant is accused of attacking the girl, who was 14 or 15 at the time, in Hollis on April 29.

He was arrested on May 6 and initially ordered held on $75,000 cash bail or $150,000 bail with surety. He was released on May 24 after a third party used a house as collateral to bail him.

But Grant’s bail was reduced to personal recognizance, his promise to appear in court, on June 27 after the third party rescinded the bail, according to court records.

Grant remains free while the case against him is pending. He is next expected to appear in York County Superior Court to be arraigned on the charges in the indictment.

Grant’s profile appears on the Maine Sex Offender Registry, which shows he was convicted on a charge of unlawful sexual contact on a person under the age of 14 from a 1999 case and another charge of unlawful sexual contact on a person under the age of 14 from a 1998 case.

If convicted, Grant faces up to 30 years in prison on the Class A felony, 10 years in prison on the Class B felony and 5 years in prison on the Class C felony.

Neither the prosecutor assigned to the case nor Grant’s attorney returned phone messages seeking comment.
