BRUNSWICK – Rachel Kennedy had three goals and an assist, powering Bowdoin to a 4-1 field hockey victory over Wesleyan in a NESCAC opener at Brunswick.

Katie Riley added a goal and an assist for Bowdoin; Hannah Gartner had seven saves.

COLBY 3, WILLIAMS 0: Freshman Hannah Hearn scored at 1:14, Charlotte Deavers and Misha Strage added second-half goals, and the Mules earned their first win over the Ephs since 2001 in a NESCAC opener at Waterville.

Sarah Evans earned the shutout with five saves.

TUFTS 1, BATES 0: Annie Artz scored 16 minutes in and the defending Division III champion Jumbos (1-0) held the Bobcats (1-1) without a shot in a NESCAC opener at Lewiston.

ST. JOSEPH’S 3, ANNA MARIA 0: Kelsey Dumond, Effie Drew and Rachelle Messuri scored as St. Joseph’s (2-0) won at Paxton, Mass.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

BOWDOIN 2, WESLEYAN 1: Jamie Hofstetter scored the tying goal 44 seconds before halftime and Kiersten Turner struck in the 65th minute, giving Bowdoin a NESCAC win at Brunswick.

Maggie Godley and Abby Einwag had assists for Bowdoin (2-0), which held a 19-6 edge in shots over the Cardinals.

MAINE 5, HOFSTRA 2: Cassidy Svetek scored twice, and the Black Bears (1-3) outlasted the Pride (1-3) at Hempstead, N.Y.

Marissa Shaw, Nicole Sevey and Sydney Veljacic also scored for Maine, while Annabelle Hamilton had two assists.

UNE 4, USM 1: Hannah Warren had a goal and an assist, helping the Nor’easters (1-1) take down the Huskies (2-2) at Gorham.

Peyton Dostie opened the scoring for Southern Maine at 12:43 of the first, but Hannah Tavella answered two minutes later.

Casey Clark put UNE ahead with 3:13 left in the half, and Warren and Brittany Liptak added second-half goals.

BATES 2, TUFTS 1: The Bobcats got goals from Julia Rafferty and Kara Stefaniak, and four saves from Anabel Schmelz in a season-opening NESCAC win at Lewiston.

BABSON 3, UNE 0: Falmouth’s Jessica DiPhillippo scored twice in the first 20 minutes, leading the Beavers (3-0) past the Nor’easters (1-2) at Babson Park, Mass., on the first day of the Wellesley College Invitational.

HAMPSHIRE 1, SMCC 1: Michela Desjardins scored the tying goal with a minute left in the first half as the Seawolves (0-1-1) played to a draw in a Yankee Small College Conference opener at South Portland.

WILLIAMS 2, COLBY 1: Katie Wardlaw scored with 16:08 remaining to lift the defending NESCAC champion Ephs over the Mules at Waterville.

Annie Papadellis scored for Colby in the 37th minute, while Ruthie Hawley had an assist and Emily Brook made 10 saves.

MEN’S SOCCER

WESLEYAN 3, BOWDOIN 1: Chris Kafina scored the first of his two goals in the fifth minute, and the Cardinals (2-0) led the rest of the way, winning a NESCAC opener against the Polar Bears (1-1) at Brunswick.

Austin Downing scored for Bowdoin with four minutes left.

ST. JOSEPH’S 4, UM- PRESQUE ISLE 0: The Monks (1-2-1) broke out in the second half, getting four goals from four players to beat the Owls (1-2) at Presque Isle.

Kyle Shangraw, Fabrice Iraduha, Peter Dore and Calvin Servaes provided the scoring for St. Joseph’s, which outshot UMPI, 42-5.

USM 2, HUSSON 2: Tyler Rand’s goal gave Southern Maine (0-3-1) a 1-0 lead 16:51 into the game in Bangor, but Jimmy Fitzpatrick countered for the Eagles (0-3-1) 88 seconds later.

Husson’s Cooper Antone and USM’s Michael Daniel traded second-half scores.

TUFTS 3, BATES 0: Max Hoppenot scored in the first half, Kyle Volpe and Tal Smith added goals in the second and the Jumbos (1-0) beat the Bobcats (1-1) in a NESCAC opener at Lewiston.

WILLIAMS 1, COLBY 0: Patrick Gordon scored in the 65th minute and Peter Morrell made seven saves as the Ephs got by the Mules in a NESCAC opener at Waterville.

UNE 1, THOMAS 0: Ryan Stephens scored early in the second half and Adrian McParland made five saves to give the Nor’easters (2-0-1) a win over the Terriers (2-2) at Biddeford.

FOOTBALL

HARTWICK 33, HUSSON 7: John Garcia threw five touchdown passes, including four to Frankie Molina, leading the Hawks in a season-opening rout at Oneonta, N.Y.

Ryan Stroud threw a 3-yard touchdown pass to Caleb King in the second quarter for the Eagles’ only points.
