FREEPORT
The Freeport Flag Ladies, in conjunction with the police and fire/rescue departments, will lead a 9/11 remembrance ceremony, 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, at the corner of Main and West streets.
The patriotic group will accept a wreath from the Worcester Wreath Company, and hang it on the town monument.
Each Tuesday morning, the Freeport Flag Ladies stand on Main Street, wearing our country’s colors and waving the American flag. They have held their ground in all weather conditions.
Carmen Footer, Joanne Miller and Elaine Greene — along with many others — will proudly wave the stars and stripes Wednesday.
“Our country came under attack on September 11, 2001, and like so many Americans that day I wanted to do something,”
Greene said.
The Freeport Flag Ladies also make the long drive to Bangor to join the Maine Troop Greeters at Bangor International Airport and to Pease International in New Hampshire to meet the troop flights whenever possible. They have greeted thousands of soldiers from all over this great nation who were being deployed or returning home after long deployments.

We believe it's important to offer commenting on certain stories as a benefit to our readers. At its best, our comments sections can be a productive platform for readers to engage with our journalism, offer thoughts on coverage and issues, and drive conversation in a respectful, solutions-based way. It's a form of open discourse that can be useful to our community, public officials, journalists and others.
We do not enable comments on everything — exceptions include most crime stories, and coverage involving personal tragedy or sensitive issues that invite personal attacks instead of thoughtful discussion.
