Bates scores in final minutes to beat USM women, 1-0
Kara Stefaniak’s shot from 30 yards hit the crossbar before crossing the line in the 83rd minute Tuesday, giving Bates a 1-0 victory against the University of Southern Maine in a women’s soccer game at Gorham.
Anabel Schmelz of Bates (2-0) didn’t need a save for the shutout. Katie Cobb had four saves for USM (3-2).
• Lauren Chouinard and Danielle Daigle scored, Jaci Lorenzen made four saves and St. Joseph’s (3-1) earned a 2-0 victory against UM-Farmington (0-2-1) at Standish.
MEN’S SOCCER: Chris Pratt and Keith Chernin each had two assists, helping Colby (1-1) take a 4-0 victory against Husson (0-4-1) at Waterville.
FIELD HOCKEY: Erin Maguire had a goal and two assists, Caitlin Murray added three assists and Colby (2-0) rolled to a 5-0 win over the University of New England (1-2) at Waterville.
SOCCER
WORLD CUP: Italy and the Netherlands became the first European teams to qualify for next year’s World Cup: Italy came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1, and Robin Van Persie’s goals in the 49th and 53rd minutes lifted the Netherlands to a 2-0 victory at Andorra.
They joined host Brazil, and Asian nations Australia, Iran, Japan and South Korea already in the 32-team field for the World Cup, which kicks off June 12.
England tied 0-0 at Ukraine as Frank Lampard made his 100th international appearance, leaving the Three Lions (4-0-4) atop Group H with two games left, one point ahead of Montenegro and Ukraine (both 4-1-3).
BOXING
DE LA HOYA IN REHAB: Oscar De La Hoya, a former boxer and current head of a boxing promotion company, admitted himself to a treatment facility as he continues to fight his substance abuse.
De La Hoya voluntarily admitted himself to an unnamed facility. The move came before the biggest fight of the year for his promotion company when Floyd Mayweather Jr. takes on Canelo Alvarez on Saturday night.
AUTO RACING
KANAAN’S FUTURE: Tony Kanaan, the Indianapolis 500 champion, confirmed he talked with a NASCAR team, Joe Gibbs Racing, as he contemplates his future – one that could be outside of IndyCar.
Kanaan’s contract with KV Racing ends this year and despite attempts to find a ride in IndyCar, he doesn’t have a deal for 2014. Kanaan said he wants to stay in the IndyCar series but since he’s a free agent at the end of the season, he’s looking at every opportunity.
OLYMPICS
IOC PRESIDENT: Thomas Bach, a 59-year-old German lawyer, was elected president of the International Olympic Committee.
Bach succeeds Jacques Rogge, the Belgian who is stepping down after 12 years as head of the Olympic body.
• Larry Probst, the head of the U.S. Olympic Committee, was elected to the IOC – a big boost for American efforts to regain influence in the international Olympic world after years of strained relations.
SAILING
AMERICA’S CUP: Emirates Team New Zealand beat defending champion Oracle Team USA so soundly in Race 5 that Larry Ellison’s syndicate had to call a timeout.
The Kiwis took advantage of a tactical mistake by Oracle Team USA to win in a runaway on San Francisco Bay, finishing 1 minute, 5 seconds ahead of the American boat. Not long before the scheduled start of Race 6, Oracle Team USA said it was playing its one postponement card of the regatta.
Wednesday is an off day. Races 6 and 7 are scheduled for Thursday. Team New Zealand leads 4 to minus-1 and needs five more wins to claim the oldest trophy in international sports for the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron.
BASKETBALL
NBA: The Dallas Mavericks added center Fab Melo, guard-forward D.J. Kennedy and guard Richard McConnell to their roster for training camp.
Melo was a first-round pick by Boston last year and played six games for the Celtics. The 7-footer spent most of the season with the Maine Red Claws of the D-League.
