YARMOUTH – Olivia Madore drove down the left wing, weaved through defenders and scored in the second overtime Friday afternoon to give North Yarmouth Academy a 2-1 victory over Yarmouth in a Western Maine Conference field hockey game.

Madore’s goal capped the first meeting in seven years between NYA, a perennial Western Class C power, and Yarmouth, which dropped from Class B to Class C this season.

“The ball ended up at the top of the circle in the center, and I just drove it in,” said Madore.

It wasn’t her first chance of the game, as she was unable to capitalize on several runs to the goal during regulation.

“My stick was pretty slippery, so my hands kept slipping and the chances just weren’t happening, but everyone knew it would happen eventually,” said Madore.

Rain fell throughout most of the game, but it did not put a damper on the pace or level of play.

“I’m very proud of the way they played,” Yarmouth Coach Mandy Lewis said. “They came out with intensity. I couldn’t have asked for any more of them today.”

After NYA (3-0) was unable to convert several scoring chances in the first half, the Clippers controlled the pace for most of the of the second half and got on the board first. A penalty corner led to a shot by Katherine Overhaug. Elizabeth Coughlin made the save but Yarmouth’s Emma Peterson grabbed the rebound and scored.

The lead didn’t last long, as NYA sophomore Juju Tardif found the back of the goal after a scramble in the circle only three minutes later.

Yarmouth (2-1) had a chance to take the lead with three minutes left in regulation when Kallie Hutchinson launched a shot toward the net, but Coughlin made another of her nine saves.

Both goalies were stellar. Yarmouth’s Victoria Messina recorded double-digit saves, stifling several NYA threats to preserve the tie.

“I’m giving their goalie some good credit here,” NYA Coach Tracy Quimby said. “She did an excellent job.”

In the first overtime, Yarmouth dictated the pace of play and garnered three penalty corners, but Coughlin stopped two shots by Hutchinson.

Madore’s goal was assisted by Abby McKelvey, who gained control near midfield and passed it to Madore on the left side. Madore made several nifty moves to dodge defenders.

It was a fitting way to end a well-played game between two evenly-matched teams who will meet again at Yarmouth on Oct. 7.

“It was a lot of fun,” Quimby said. “We played really well. They’re an excellent team. It’s going to be a good, challenging season.”
