SCARBOROUGH – Bangor made a long trek to southern Maine to play a football game Friday night, just as it used to do in the 1970s and 1980s.

But the Rams aren’t the power they once were, and Scarborough, rebounding from an opening-game loss, had too much of everything for a 34-7 victory in a Class A game.

The meeting between Eastern and Western Maine teams was the first between the schools.

With the state football realignment, Bangor will play at Windham in a few weeks, and will be home against three other teams that were moved to Eastern Class A — Portland, Deering and Cheverus.

Bangor regularly played games in this end of the state in the past, but that changed when it joined the Pine Tree Conference.

Now, the latest in the numerous high school football changes over the years has Bangor paying regular visits again.

The Red Storm (1-1) spread the offense with the running of Kenny Adams, Dan LeClair and quarterback Ben Greenberg. Throw in Greenberg’s passing and the Red Storm had too many threats for Bangor (1-1).

“We shared the ball,” said Scarborough Coach Lance Johnson. “We put people back where they felt more comfortable.”

One of the changes after the opening-game loss to Sanford, Johnson said, was moving Chris Cyr from wide receiver back to tight end.

After Scarborough shook off early jitters — it had back-to-back motion penalties in the first series — the offense started to click.

Adams and LeClair scored two touchdowns apiece and gained huge chunks of yardage along with Greenberg, a senior who played behind Dylan Russo last season.

“We had a good change of pace running the ball,” said LeClair. “Kenny used his speed to the outside and I ran more inside. They had a hard time adjusting.”

Greenberg finished with a game-high 98 yards on 12 carries. LeClair added 90 yards on 16 carries and Adams gained 90 yards on 10 carries.

Greenberg completed 6 of 12 passes for 145 yards and one touchdown.

“Scarborough is a very athletic team,” said Bangor Coach Mark Hackett. “We’re a young team trying to put it together. We like coming to southern Maine to play.”

LeClair made it a 6-0 game with a 3-yard run with 2:22 left in the opening quarter. Cam Langlois booted the point after.

Early in the second quarter, Scarborough took over on its 49. A 17-yard run by Adams, followed by a Bangor personal foul, brought the ball to the 15. The Red Storm scored in four plays when Adams took it over from the 2.

It was 13-0 at halftime.

Scarborough scored on its opening series in the second half. Taking over on the 34, the Red Storm gave the ball three straight times to LeClair, who got it just over midfield to the 49. On first down, Greenberg fired a long pass to a streaking Adams down the sideline for a touchdown to make it 20-0.

Cyr scored from 4 yards on an end- around late in the third quarter and LeClair closed the scoring for the Red Storm with a 7-yard run in the final quarter.

Bangor scored late in the game on a 5-yard run by Ben Crichton.

In the second quarter, Bangor had some success throwing the ball and nearly clicked on what likely would have been a touchdown, but quarterback Xavier Lewis and receiver Alex Welch just missed connecting.
