TORONTO – Toronto Blue Jays slugger Edwin Encarnacion needs surgery on his left wrist and will miss the remainder of the season, the team announced Tuesday.

Left-hander Brett Cecil is also being shut down for the final 13 games with a sore elbow.

Encarnacion sat out four games last week with soreness in his wrist. He returned to play all three games of a weekend series against Baltimore, but had just one hit in 12 at-bats.

Encarnacion ranks third in the majors with 36 home runs this season, and his 104 RBI are the fourth-highest total. He’s batting .272.

YANKEES: Alex Rodriguez returned to the lineup after leaving Sunday’s game with a sore right calf.

Rodriguez, who hit second and was the DH, tested his calf with some pregame drills before taking part in batting practice.

METS: Pitcher Matt Harvey will try to rehab his injured elbow without reconstructive surgery, a move he hopes will keep him on the mound next season.

Tommy John surgery remains a possibility. Harvey will soon begin a throwing program designed to last as long as 6 to 8 weeks. If he feels pain or other symptoms that hinder his pitching, he likely will need the operation, which probably would sideline him for the 2014 season.

BARRY BONDS was ordered to meet with U.S. Probation Department officials to discuss terms of a 30-day house arrest.

A federal judge ordered Bonds to meet with the officials to work out the details of his sentence after he lost his appeal of his obstruction of justice conviction.

ASTROS: Catcher Jason Castro was placed on the 15-day disabled list with discomfort in his right knee, ending his season.

Castro had a cyst in his right knee drained Sept. 3.

RANGERS: General Manager Jon Daniels said it’s his full expectation that Manager Ron Washington will return next season.
