SKOWHEGAN — A Skowhegan woman was seriously injured early Friday after being struck by a car while crossing Madison Avenue, according to police.
Michaelena Stone, 19, was flown by LifeFlight helicopter to Eastern Maine Medical Center in Bangor after the accident, which occurred when she was trying to cross the intersection near Cumberland Farms, police Officer Josh King said.
Stone was crossing from Pleasant Street to High Street when she was struck by a 2010 Chevrolet Malibu being driven southbound on Madison Avenue by Stephen Plourde, 52, of Skowhegan, according to King.
“She (Stone) was hit by the front of the car – it was on the passenger side of the front quarter panel, and she did strike the windshield,” he said. Plourde was not injured, he said.
The accident was reported at 6:57 a.m., during heavy traffic, he said.
State police Trooper Aaron Turcotte is working on an accident reconstruction, according to King.
King said he did not expect the report to be issued until the end of next week.
It is not clear whether the traffic light at the intersection was green for the Malibu traveling south.
“That’s one of the matters under investigation,” he said. “That’s something we’re trying to get a solid stance on – what was going on as far as the lights go.”
Stone, who was conscious at the scene, was taken by Redington-Fairview General Hospital Emergency Medical Services to the hospital and then transferred to Bangor by LifeFlight, he said.
By afternoon, no charges had been filed in the accident, he said.
