PORTLAND — Ewa Varney and Meaghan Wells scored in the first half and Edie Pallozzi added a second-half goal as Deering earned a 3-0 victory over Portland in an SMAA girls’ soccer match Monday at Fitzpatrick Stadium.

Varney opened the scoring with a shot from about 25 yards midway through the first half, and Wells knocked in a rebound after a corner kick just before halftime. Pallozzi’s goal also was on a rebound.

MARSHWOOD 3, MASSABESIC 1: Hannah Folger scored the go-ahead goal and set up an insurance tally by Hailey Tarr as the Hawks (4-1) beat the Mustangs (3-2) at South Berwick.

Lydia St. Pierre also had a goal and an assist for Marshwood, which fell behind on a goal by Massabesic’s Emma Cost six minutes into the match.

 BONNY EAGLE 2, NOBLE 2: Meredith Podolec put in two goals in the second half to help Noble (0-4-1) tie Bonny Eagle (0-5-1) at Standish.

Maddy Jarvis and Lizzie Adkins scored for Bonny Eagle in the first half.

BOYS’ SOCCER

NOBLE 4, THORNTON ACADEMY 1: Josh Emard notched a pair of goals to lead the Knights (5-0-1) over the Trojans (0-5-1) at North Berwick.

Henry Hintermeister put Noble on the board first. Sean Jackson contributed a goal and an assist.

Eric Gooch scored for Thornton.

NORTH YARMOUTH ACADEMY 4, WELLS 1: Jackson Cohan-Smith had a goal and two assists as the Panthers (4-0) beat the Warriors (1-4) at Wells.

DJ Nicholas and Forrest Chicoine each added a goal and an assist. Wesley Bright also scored for NYA.

Nick Ramsey recorded the Wells goal.

FIELD HOCKEY

KENNEBUNK 1, CAPE ELIZABETH 0: Stephanie Ayotte scored 19:54 into the first half to give the Rams (4-3) a win over the Capers (5-2) at Kennebunk.

FALMOUTH 4, FREEPORT 0: Ellie Fitzgerald finished with three goals and Mikey Richards also scored to lead the Yachtsmen (6-1) past the Falcons (2-5) at Falmouth.

POLAND 3, GRAY-NEW GLOUCESTER 1: Amanda Dube, Carly King and Kyla Sturtevant scored to lead the Knights (1-5) over the Patriots (0-7) at Gray.

Vanessa Tripp scored for Gray-New Gloucester. 

WELLS 2, SACOPEE VALLEY 1: Christina LeBlanc and Kassie Bachelder scored a goal apiece as the Warriors (2-3) edged the Hawks (0-4-1) at Wells.

Ashley Parker opened the scoring for Sacopee about five minutes into the game before LeBlanc and Bachelder answered to give Wells a 2-1 halftime lead.

LAKE REGION 5, GREELY 0: Abby Scott-Mitchell had three goals and an assist to power the Lakers (5-2) past the Rangers (2-4) at Naples. 

BIDDEFORD 3, GORHAM 2: Taylor Turgeon broke a 1-1 tie in the second half and Charlotte White scored twice as the Tigers edged the Rams at Biddeford.

Hannah Southard and Darcie Brown scored for Gorham. 

SCARBOROUGH 5, PORTLAND 0: Maggie Carbin, Abby Walker, Maddy Dobecki, Kristen Murray and Rachael Wallace scored for the Red Storm (6-0) in a win over the visiting Bulldogs (1-6).

VOLLEYBALL

GORHAM 3, THORNTON ACADEMY 0: Tori Small finished with 13 service points, five aces, 11 points and six assists, while Charlene Landry added 15 service points, four aces and seven assists to lead the Rams (3-4) past the visiting Trojans (1-4), 25-19, 25-14, 25-15.
