ORONO — A former head of the federal agency that focuses on oceans and the atmosphere is speaking in Maine as part of the Sen. George J. Mitchell Lecture series.

Jane Lubchenco was administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration from 2009 to 2013. A marine ecologist and environmental scientist, she’s delivering a lecture Wednesday at the University of Maine in Orono titled, “Science Serving Society: Achieving Real-World Solutions.”

Lubchenco has received a MacArthur “genius” award and 18 honorary doctorates. The scientific journal Nature named her “2010 Newsmaker of the Year.”

George Mitchell was a U.S. senator for Maine from 1980 to 1995. Among other things, he later played a leading role in negotiating for peace in Northern Ireland and the Middle East.

Mitchell will also provide remarks at Wednesday’s event.
